Laxalt is ahead of the (D) candidate in Nevada by less than 1,000 votes, with 5% of the votes left to count.
A stream-lined one-size-fits-all process would make a lot more sense, but (R)s don't want that because then it takes away their ability to cry about "fraud" when they lose.

Laxallts lead is too small. The Senate will remain in Democratic hands. As for the House, Dems must overtake their opponents in four races in which they are behind and win all in which they lead. But it’s not impossible. Remaining votes are going to overall heavily favor dems but it depends on how each individual race plays out. The fact that it’s this close is a huge win for dems.
Why not both?
Especially given that this was a mid-term when the POTUS's party usually fares poorly.

A Republican House with a razor thin majority is not a disaster. Biden already passed his major legislative initiatives and doesn't need the House anymore . Most presidents focus on foreign policy and governance their last two years. And Trump set the precedent that congressional subpoenas can just be ignored by the Executive Branch
