But you still defend your position that being a slave was not significantly worse than being an industrial worker. I find that mindbogglingly disgusting. Being tied to a whipping post and having no way to escape the punishment today or similar punishment tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow until the day you die IS significantly worse than being an industrial worker. So are you saying that being educated by your employer/owner, having your children educated by him, getting his assistance to patent one of your inventions, getting perhaps two weeks vacation each year, having your family freed by him and being given a mercantile business, and accumulate the financial wherewithal to buy a $300,000 plantation...
Is SIGNIFICANTLY worse than:
Working 7 days a week in a factory, having your family live in a squalid tenement, your wife taking in laundry and sewing, and keeping your children at home from school every day to do piece work?

it is an easy choice. I would always choose to be a free man rather than be someone else's property, regardless of how benevolent he might seem at the time. As property, he could always sell me to someone else tomorrow less benevolent, as happened to the protagonist in the movie in question.

You didn't answer my question. You obviously think slavery and the subsequent racism that followed were less than the dealings of a hard working White Family, so I'll ask you again: When you see images of human beings hung from trees while the people who contributed to their demise look up and smile, do you think that their situation was less than the hardworking laborers who were white?

If you were alive in the 1850's, and you were the child of a northern white industrial worker, you would CHOOSE to give up your freedom and become the property of a slave owner in the south, because you believe that the "certain" misery you felt awaited you in the north was worse than the "possible" misery you would suffer at the hands of a slave owner...
