And I proved so with the case of Ben Montgomery. A slave who was educated, ran a store for his owner, was an inventor, his owners sought to help him secure a patent for one of his inventions. He was given his freedom and purchased a $300,000 plantation, something I doubt you could do even in today's dollars.

Something a poor white factory worker in New York City or Philadelphia certainly could not do.

Furthermore, the children of industrial laborers were often illiterate, being kept at home in their squalid tenements doing piece work to help the family eat. So no, they could not read.

And there was basically no such thing as holidays, whereas one of the links I posted indicated slaves were frequently given holidays, sometimes as many as 8 days for Christmas season alone. Shit, that's better'n Walmart, ain't it?

you're right taft... heck... if folks had their choice, I am sure that those white northern factory workers would have jumped at the chance to trade places with blacks in the south and be owned by other human beings. Their lives would have been no worse than in those factories, and the weather would have been so much better. Little annoyances like whipping posts would have been a small price to pay for all those holidays and sunny warm workdays.

What I said was that in certain circumstances, slavery was not *significantly* worse that being an industrial worker. That both systems were terribly flawed. Etc.
