House Intelligence to hire money-laundering experts to chase Trump financial trail

Democrats at the House Intelligence Committee are seeking to hire money-laundering and forensic accounting experts to investigate President Trump’s financial dealings, according to a new report.

The potential hires would delve into unanswered financial questions pertaining to Trump and Russia, the Daily Beast reported Wednesday.

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., is likely to take over as committee chairman in the next Congress and has expressed interest in Trump’s relationship with Deutsche Bank, which last year agreed to pay hundreds of millions to settle allegations that it helped Russians engage in money-laundering.

Freeny becomes the 17th attorney known to join Mueller’s probe since it was established earlier this year. The special counsel has hired multiple former prosecutors and attorneys with a wide range of expertise, including public corruption and white-collar crime. Many of them were Clinton donors.

Most recently, Mueller hired Greg Andres, a former Justice Department official specializing in white-collar criminal defense and a Democrat backer. A search of federal election records shows that Andres has donated at least a total of $3,700 to federal Democratic candidates, including $2,700 to New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in March 2017. His wife, Ronnie Abrams, was appointed as a federal judge by Obama in 2011.
