Columbia professor is charged with incest

most likely because the interests of the state outweigh the "freedom" of the state's citizens to engage in incest....

do you believe that incest, especially incest, that results in pregnancy, does not harm society?

What I believe is not relevant, is it?

"In the United States, every state and the District of Columbia have some form of codified incest prohibition.

However, individual statutes vary widely. Rhode Island repealed its criminal incest statute in 1989, Ohio only targets parental figures, and New Jersey does not apply any penalties when both parties are 18 years of age or older. Massachusetts issues a primitive penalty of up to 20 years' imprisonment for those engaging in sexual activities with relatives closer than first cousins and Hawaii up to 5 years in jail for "sexual penetration" with certain blood relatives and in-laws.

In all states, close blood-relatives that fall under the incest statutes include father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, and in some states, first cousins. Many states also apply incest laws to non-blood relations including stepparents, step-siblings, and in-laws."

What I haven't found is a reason why private sex between consenting adults is the business of the government.

You know, I have three daughters. I read a story like this and all I can think...

What kind of a sick, twisted fuck can look at his daughter and think, "I'd hit that!"?

Then, I see people defend this sort of sick practice, question the validity of the laws prohibiting it, and I think I get my answer.

Huffpo says it was his daughter.

"A Columbia political science professor has been charged with having a sexual relationship with his 24-year-old daughter, the Columbia Daily Spectator reports.

David Epstein, 46, was charged Thursday with one count of third-degree incest. Police told the Spectator that the relationship appeared consensual.

Epstein is currently on administrative leave."

Can anyone say Woody Allen?

your first sentence is a cop out....

you have completely ignored the balance test between the state's interest and the individual freedom interest.....

there simply is zero benefit from having a father and daughter or brother and sister....engage in sexual relationships, especially when it results in pregnancy

Why should your morals be imposed on others?

Are you in favor of instituting Sharia?

How is it that this is the only defendant? According to the report the female he slept with was an adult and it was consensual, if such is the case why isn't she a co-defendant?

My opinions, beliefs, preferences etc. are not the issue, the way I see it.

How is sex between any two (or more) consenting adults the business of government?

likely because she is the child....and one of the reasons for incest laws is the unequal relationship/influence aspect

She isn't a child. She was of age, over 18, and according to laws in every state capable of making her own decisions.

Now. I have another question. Why would the actions of two adults who consented so such activity be a crime? Yeah, I know about the ick factor, but what does that have to do with the price of rice in China?

again....the balancing test

and you keep ignoring the "consent" issue, in that, is there really true consent when a child """consents""" to have sex with their parent....

read up on consent....

If a person is 18, are they an adult?
