California’s economic situation!

I don't know what that answer is. What I do know is that teachers are underpaid now, given what is expected of them and the personal expense they incur. No two schools have the same $-per-student because schools are funded by property taxes. So a school in a district with high property values is inevitably going to be better funded than a school in a district with low property values. I happen to think that is immoral and wrong, and that all schools should be funded equally. The current system of funding schools with property taxes is a holdover from Jim Crow that needs to go.[/QUOTE]

You win the internet today.

Let the racist right tell it, they throw so much money at schools that we money isn't the problem. They say it's Blacks don't want to learn so stop funding schools.

None can ever show me where tons of money has been spent on education.

They are nothing but racist liars.

They do? Who said that?

Define "tons of money".

The United States spent $12,300 per FTE student at the elementary/secondary level, which was 29 percent higher than the average of $9,600 for OECD member countries reporting data.

Right, and there's not enough housing because Prop 13 makes building affordable housing unaffordable for municipalities, developers, and homeowners.

So...get rid of Prop 13, right?

Nope, he's going towards wealth California liberals are just as racist as those on the right because they create zoning laws that keep Blacks away from living near them. They don't want affordable housing because that's all Blacks can afford.

That's what he's getting at.

He's justifying right wing racism by falsely equating CA dems just like the right.

If "California liberals are just as racist as those on the right because they create zoning laws that keep Blacks away from living near them. They don't want affordable housing because that's all Blacks can afford", how is it the right that's supposedly "justifying racism"?

This is quite the conundrum.......

Thing is, removing that SALT deduction isn't going to affect liberals who rent in Los Angeles, it's going to affect Conservatives in Orange County who own homes. So you're cutting off your nose to spite your face by removing the SALT deductions, and pretty much guaranteeing that Democrats will win the 7 or 8 House districts Clinton won that are currently represented by Republicans, most of whom voted to raise their constituents' taxes by removing that deduction.

What a dumb move. Almost as dumb as picking a fight with a football team whose fans threw snowballs at Santa Claus.

Works for me. Let's get rid of them.

Because your reforms are punitive and do nothing to address the systemic issue of under-funding education. Also, you're not going to attract good candidates if you do away with all the incentives. You're going to diminish the supply of good candidates. But maybe that's your plan. Starve the beast of talent so it dies and you can replace it with something worse. How cynical.

I'm a teacher in Florida. I contribute 3% of my check toward my retirement. Comes to about $110 a month. The starting salary for our district is about $43,000 not including benefits. About $52,000 for the LA school district, also not including benefits. Both before taxes. Now after federal, state and local taxes, that LA teacher has to live on the economy. Possibly not much of a difference, except the FRS(Florida Retirement System)is fully funded at the moment. The union bitches about the 3%, and they are constantly on the state's case about not "bargaining in good faith"(which is code for "we can't wring more money out of these guys because of reality"). Another thing the state gets slammed for is something common to all states, I believe. It's the tired old "we're not investing enough in our children's education!", which is also code for "we're not paying the teachers enough", because our schools are packed with "Smart Classroom Technology" and carts of new laptop computers. Freakin' place looks like the bridge of the Starship Enterprise. The bottom line is, the government at every level MUST start dealing with fiscal realities, especially involving benefits, pensions and entitlements

Oh, I totally agree that it's hard to start a family and buy a home in CA, and Prop 13 has everything to do with that for all the reasons cited earlier. So if you want to make housing more affordable in CA, you have to do away with Prop 13. It's that simple.

It's not that simple. You haven't touched the zoning laws or ninbyism. Do you think that will all change if prop 13 goes away? Look what just happened to scott wieners bill. Would you have supported it?

Everyone pays taxes.

Once again, you are listening to the racist right who lies about taxes. They tell you Blacks and Mexicans are lazy fucks who don't pay taxes so you hard working white men pay for them.

That's why you think only the wealthy pay taxes.

I see. So once again you have no idea how our tax structure works and who pays them and because you lack that knowledge you make assignine statements like above

Yeah, in 2012 when voters got to decide if taxes were to be raised, I remember Conservatives saying it would result in the sky falling.

As usual, they were wrong.

Yes, I remember the conservative claims that Jerry Brown's tax hike would crash the economy.

Instead, the economy took flight and we eliminated the fiscal disaster left to us by Republican governor Terminator.

Democrats controlled the state congress all through Arnold's time in office, no different than today. California relies heavily on personal income tax and cap gains from the top one percent. When the economy is good we boom, when it's not we suffer. You act like Arnold came in and tried to upend how the state was run when he did nothing of the sort. The economy is going to turn while Gavin is governor and Dems control state congress and California will suffer. Are you going to be saying the same thing then that you are now?

I am sure it is all mere coincidence snf that California's stunning fiscal and economic comeback had nothing to do with Jerry Brown being elected and the Democratic super majorities in the legislature.
