You're the one who made the claim geographic size matters.

California has less people than the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states, and far less people than Japan - even though they are comparable in geographic size. So in terms of generating wealth and economic activity, California is doing more with less.

And without those " Blue shitholes " the Red shitholes would have to raise their taxes or cut the services they supply to their people.
Those Blue shitholes send in a LOT more money to the Federal government then they get back and the Red shitholes get a lot more money from the Federal government then they send in.
