It gets tricky in some legal matters.

They aren't asking for special treatment, that is balderdash, they are asking for equal treatment.

NO THEY CAN'T.
They can't claim the married exemption on their taxes.
The majority can't carry the other person on their insurance at work.
If one dies, without a will, the property doesn't automatically go to the other person.
If one has a child and it's theirs; if they die, their "spouse" will not gain custody.
This goes on and on.
Why are you so bothered by two people being married, since marriage is supposed to be about love, companionship, trust, etc.

Equal treatment would entail extending marriage to any two consenting adults who wish to marry. Nothing special about those who happen to be gay.

No more special than all the straight couples who marry and are granted these benefits.

And yes, there are differences between couples and platonic friends. Shared rights as adoptive parents or rights of the non-biological parent would be one that comes to mind.

Platonic friends or siblings do not adopt children together or raise children with both parenting them.

Well, straights deserve marriage because only straights have the potential of procreation. Youll need some other justification for extending marriage to gays, while still witholding it from the single mother and grandmother down the street who have been raising a family for years. Because the fact that they dont rub genitals has no rational relation to serving the stated governmental purpose of formation of stable households. And still

§ 160.204. PRESUMPTION OF PATERNITY.
(a) A man is presumed to be the father of a child if:
(1) he is married to the mother of the child and the child is born during the marriage;....

Only applies in the case of a heterosexual couple.

Modern medicine is a wonderful thing. Between artificial insemination and surrogate mothers, gays can have children.
