nov 10 2021 “White language supremacy” is the problem, and destroying grading standards is the solution, at least according to one Arizona State University English professor.

Asao B. Inoue is a professor of Rhetoric & Composition at ASU and he is urging his fellow (xello?) teachers to fight “white language supremacy” by implementing “labor-based grading” which “redistributes power in ways that allow for more diverse habits of language to circulate.”

The problem is this: “White language supremacy in writing classrooms is due to the uneven and diverse linguistic legacies that everyone inherits, and the racialized white discourses that are used as standards, which give privilege to those students who embody those habits of white language already.”

In other words, when kids are taught proper English they forget all the vernacular they learned growing up and then we’ll lose all our cherished diversity and everybody will die of injustice, The End.

Or maybe Inoue is saying people of color just can’t be expected to learn proper English.

You are right that it is not a racial issue, but neither is it limited to the left. Many college professors have lowered standards by giving credit to (any) students who are "trying," give extra credit for bringing canned goods or attending special study skills classes, grade on a curve, or just increase their final grade.

This is done for several reasons: pressure from the college to keep enrollment and retention high, to keep their jobs or attract students because their courses or program is easier, they feel grades are too low and they may be responsible due to poor teaching, to be friendly/sympathetic to students.

Some of the technical courses (plant processing) are full of students there to get VA benefits and hang around taking 2-3 different programs to keep their money coming. The teacher makes it easier because otherwise they have no program.

let's face it, unless you are studying law or medicine or aerodynamics or accounting or quantum physics or biology, etc. any old degree will work when it comes to doing 98% of the jobs in this country. if you can read and write at a high school level, do math and science at that level, and follow directions and are keen to learn and compete and do better, that is all that really matters.

not necessarily, but most likely here in this country. just like if you took an IQ test in france, but translated to English. there would be some communication problems inherent in the test that would lower your score compared to a native frenchmen who took the test in french.

Many (most?) people are not working at jobs in their degree field. But other areas, like liberal arts, are still valuable. Many corporations hire liberal arts majors because they are better at dealing with others (according to corporations).
Education also serves a person other than simply getting a job--many become interested in areas that enrich their lives.
