Putin loses in the long term, and utterly tarnishes his legacy.

If he had retired in 2008 after saving Russia from becoming a failed state, engineering a rebounding Russian economy, and incipient democratic institutions still functional, he would have been regarded as one of Russia's greatest leaders.

Now he is going to be regarded as a war criminal, and an antidemocratic despot.

Josef Stalin took seven years to put down a nationalist Ukrainian uprising, and he was the most ruthless dictator in history.

Putin doesn't have the luxury of becoming another Stalin. Even Russians won't stand for it in the long run.

Ukraine has been a sovereign, independent state for 30 years. Putin will not be able to put the horse back in the barn. Ukrainians are not going to settle for being a vassal state of the Russian empire again.
