“So anyway, I told them before you got here, I said I’m glad we won this race in New York,” Clinton told Ryan, when the two met backstage at a forum on the national debt held by the Pete Peterson Foundation. But he added, “I hope Democrats don’t use this as an excuse to do nothing.”

Ryan told Clinton he fears that now nothing will get done in Washington.

That's better. :)

There is a way to change Medicare. Considering older individuals generally require more medication the government should negotiate with the drug companies. Of course, the simplest and most efficient way is to implement one medicare plan for everyone, namely a government plan.

How many elderly folks are dealing with illnesses that might have been prevented or slowed if they had received treatment earlier, treatment before they were eligible for Medicare? This dance is going to go on until a full government plan is finally put into effect.

I'm confident Obama's second term will result in major changes. The Dems need to lay out how other countries have dealt with the same problem. Gather up the dozen or so best plans from other countries and reformulate those ideas to fit the US. Lot's of material to work with. :)

The fact of the matter is Clinton let the proverbial cat out of the bag, that even Dems KNOW medicare needs to be reformed and he doesn't think they'll do anything about it. Ryan's plane laid out a way to do that-his willingness to NOT MAKE medicare a political football makes him honest and honorable. The dems have NO PLAN. Their only plan is to continue to make medicare a political football until it is a complete failure. The dishonest ads that show grandma being pushed over the cliff show the world just how dishonest dems are. The truth is dems only care about grandma's ability to get them elected by using dishonest scare tactics....

Oh my...another Rightie who let Sarah Palin's "Death Panel" ads go drifting by without a comment are now whining that liberals are liars...

How can you write that? Obama campaigned on government run health care. The Repubs made it clear even a government run option was a non-starter so Obama had to scrape together bits and pieces, here and there, to get the ball rolling.

Some folks think government health care is socialist take-over of the country. We all know government run health care is cheaper and it covers everyone. We all know there is not one country that reverted to a private system once a government plan took effect. We all know that the citizens in every country with government run health care insist their government keep the plan. These things can be easily checked with a few Googles.

So, who is refusing to change?

The Dems won't co-operate with the Repubs because the Repub plan goes backwards. Any and all private, for profit, plans will fail. The evidence is 100% for government medical, worldwide. There's not one example where a country reverted to private medical. What are people looking at when they say government medical won't work? Where do they even get such an idea? They can't point to one country where the citizens want their government plan abolished let alone any country that did abolish it. From where do their ideas come?

Maybe Clinton is/was like the rest but Obama pushed his plan through because the evidence, world-wide, shows government medical works.

On the upside another Obama term will see a lot of things cleared up as different aspects of his plan come on line. The conversation has to change from private vs government to Dem government plan vs Repub government plan. It's that "Overton Window" thingie. ;) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overton_window)

Obama said he would only pass HC if he had a mandate...he passed HC without a mandate. Entitlement spending is not the way to cover the needy it is the way to grow government and give away control over your health. National HC will be the same economic boondoggle and stranglehold that it is for every country that has it....and as it proves to be in our country for social security; welfare; medicare; and medicaid. Rationing care by government is the WRONG way to take care of your health. Yes, private insurers have restrictions on coverage ...but you sign up for it with knowledge of what you are buying. If they try and screw you, you appeal to a government state insurance commissioner-and are free to take your business elsewhere. With the government run plan you have no one above them to oversee them...

Clinton's disclosure proves he and other dems KNOW that medicare needs to be reformed, but that they are such political hacks that they'll only use medicare as a way to undermine republican opponents via dishonesty.

The crucial part of the statement: "...we won this race in New York..."

He also said that publicly too, in case you weren't paying attention it was all over TV this morning. President Clinton also publicly opposes Ryancare but when he made his public comment opposing Ryancare he also made it clear that to do nothing about reforming Medicare was not an option for Democrats and he is correct on both counts.

Absolutely. Two items that Dems have wanted to reform that Republicans have opposed would save, as estimated by the CBO, $200 billion annually. Those are, allowing the federal government to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies for the price of prescription drugs for seniors and eliminating the "Cost Plus" medicare payment system and replacing with payment on a treatment basis were hospitals and physicians are paid a predetermined rate for treating an illness. The fact that Republicans have undermined any attempt to implement these two common sense const saving reforms tells me that Republicans intend, as evidenced by Ryancare, to eliminate Medicare all together.

LOL...yeah criticism without an alternative... how refreshing.~ The point, again, is that he made it clear that dems used medicare as a political football.

His "public comments".

"You shouldn't draw the conclusion that the New York race means that nobody can do anything to slow the rate of Medicare costs," said Mr. Clinton, speaking with News Hour senior correspondent Gwen Ifill at the Peter G. Peterson Foundation-sponsored 2011 Fiscal Summit in Washington, D.C.

"I'm afraid that Democrats will draw the conclusion that because Congressman Ryan's proposal, I think, is not the best one, that we shouldn't do anything. I would completely disagree with that. I think there are lots of things you can do to bring down Medicare costs," Mr. Clinton said.

While he applauded Rep. Ryan's attempt to tackle some of those problems, he concluded, "On the merits, it doesn't work." He went on to say, "I hope that's the lesson we'll draw from the New York election, not that we can't talk about Medicare and that we have to tippy-toe around, but that we have got to have a system that brings health costs with our competitors."

When asked point-blank if Rep. Ryan's overall approach to deficit reduction was dead on arrival, the former president responded, "I think he's wrong to say no matter what happens and no matter what the circumstances are, we won't touch taxes."

Again, you haven't been paying attention. Read post #14. You're a day late and a nickel short. That's also a third point Clinton is absolutely correct about. As long as Republicans are unwilling to discuss the revenue side of the medicare issue it's impossible to take them serious and if Ryan is saying that this is off the table for Republicans then it just doesn't pass the smell test and thus Ryancare boils down to a naked attempt to eliminate medicare as we know it.

wow....anyone that in the fuckin' bag must literally bleed Koolade....you're so brainwashed with the liberal/socialist propaganda, it's laughable.....
the evidence, world-wide, shows government medical works ?......you need to reexamine the evidence from some sources other than far left wing....

I tried to convince a queer friend of mine how sex with a women was so much better than what he was doing and know what a useless endeavor it was....so I won't even attempt to debate this with you, you're queer for Obama, Democrats, and socialism.....

Again, Clinton, did not disagree with Ryan's medicare plan...he just bitched about the need to add raising taxes; indeed it's obvious he thinks that dems. are just gonna play political football with mdicare. Ryan's plan is up for debate...the problem is dems ain't debating it or offering any kind of solution-all they are doing is lying about what Ryan's plan does with regards to medicare.

Again, you're not paying attention cause Bill Clinton did state specifically IN PUBLIC that he opposes Ryancare as it would end medicare as we know it. He then stated, as he did to Ryan, that doing nothing was not an option for Democrats and he then stated that Republicans are not serious about reforming medicare if taxes were off the table. He said that, he said it publicly and it was all over the TV yesterday in the morning news/politics programs. You just weren't paying attention is all.

President Clinton was right on all three counts and I say, go ahead, lets have a full public debate on Ryancare and lets see how much public support it can gather.

A government plan could be augmented by private insurance. For example, those who prefer a private room.

When I was hospitalized the hospital wanted me to take a private room as I had insurance to cover it but I preferred a "ward", four people including myself. When bed-ridden a private room becomes solitary confinement.

As for government medical being an economic boondoggle and stranglehold medical costs are at least 1/3 less than US costs. Almost every country complains about medical costs whether they be 8% of GDP or 10% or 12% or....

Here's a chart of per capita costs. http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0934556.html

Again, it doesn't matter if it's $3,000/pp or $4,000/pp or $5,000/pp every country complains. The difference is every citizen is covered and the vast majority insist their government keep their plan.

Private insurance means everyone won't be covered OR it will cost more than any government plan to cover everyone. Considering it's all about costs those who propose private insurance support a plan that would result in some people not being covered and the objective is to cover everyone.
