Biden calls 9mm ‘high-caliber weapons,’ suggests banning them

Never heard of it since it was "coined" by a (one) author. I never read of this "term" in any of my hunting or firearm magazines.

I guess everything was coined by one author. Then Wonder Nine was used for 40 years by just about everyone.

Now my turn, who uses a handgun while hunting? You ask why you never heard a handgun term in your hunting magazines, well, I wonder why you would go to a hunting magazine for handgun terms.

I've never heard anyone I know use that term, including every shooter I shot with in my gun club or those I shot with in competitions.

Many people use a handgun to hunt. I've (along with my father) used a .22 handgun to hunt squirrels.

The selling point of a handgun is that it is easy to carry. If you are in a situation where you do not think you will need to shoot anything, so do not want to bother with a rifle, you carry a handgun. If you are going to hunt, you know you are going to shoot something, so I would think would want the greater accuracy of a rifle.

I suppose you could do target shooting disguised as hunting with a handgun, but if you have solid plans to try to kill something, it is best to carry a rifle.

Walt, you are ignorant when it comes to firearms, especially their uses.

You will shoot 10 times with a wonder nine in the time it takes to shoot twice with a .45. You figure in any real situation, you will be lucky if even one of those hit anything, that is an important difference.

A bit of an exaggeration. Are you suggesting to ban the "wonder nine" since it shoots 10X faster than a .45? ;)

Technically, I said 5 times faster. "You will shoot 10 times with a wonder nine in the time it takes to shoot twice with a .45." 10 is 5 times 2. You may not believe that, but there were studies done by the Defense Department back when they switched over.

A 9mm fully automatic Uzi can be 100 times faster than a revolver.

These are serious weapons, and serious developments in killing technology. Should they be banned? We cannot even ban assault weapons, so why even discuss banning wonder nines?

How accurately? I was still in the Marine Corps when those tests were done...which was before the Internet as we know it so the only info I saw was in magazines and newspapers.

It certainly is.

Agreed, but as many police forces are finding out, that extra power is not sufficient to justify the cost.

All armed LEO's have proficiency and qualification requirements which burns through a lot of ammo. 9mm is far cheaper than .40 due to the US NATO results of mass production. 9mm is, literally, better bang for the buck.

Examples per 1000 rounds of ammo:

A full auto uzi fires 30 rounds per second. A revolver can be fired 8 rounds a second. that is not a 100 times faster.

I read over the studies when I was in JR ROTC, but that was a very long time ago. But lets take a step back, and look at it.

9mm has been around for 120 years, and has been adopted by almost every army on earth as their handgun ammo. Almost every American police force switched from revolvers to wonder nines. The 5.56 NATO itself has not been adopted by almost every army on earth, but similar calibers have. The Russians and Chinese both have main rifle ammo within a few percent of the 5.56 NATO.

These standards have been adopted by the world, because they work.

Isn't a 40 caliber bullet more powerful than a 9mm?

9mm has been accepted by the world as the best balance of power, accuracy, and capacity for handguns killing human beings. Are there calibers that beat the 9mm in each area? Yes, but they do not beat the 9mm in all areas, and they get the balance off.

The .45 has a better balance for killing horses... But killing horses is no longer important in warfare.

A .38 Special is more powerful than a 9mm.

It is a bit more complex than this, but a .38 Special is basically an underpowered 9mm. It is almost the same size bullet, with a less powerful amount of powder.

There are many, many calibers more powerful than a 9mm, so that you picked out one that is not shows that you know literally nothing about guns.

I said "can be 100 times faster". I will admit there is a world record holder that can fire a revolver so fast that an Uzi is only 4 times faster. That means that a world record breaker is four times slower than my Aunt Shirley who has never fired a gun in her life (if she were firing a Uzi).

Revolvers are mechanically simple, which is really good. That makes them very reliable. But with the Glock, semi-automatic handguns became almost as reliable, so they have quickly replaced revolvers. We can debate this back and forth, but the facts are that revolvers are an antique technology that no military would chose to field today.
