The coup leaders would've done the same thing. There was no way this would've come out good for the Kurds.
Probably... It always seems to end badly for the Kurds...

Russia has warm water ports - Murmansk, St. Petersburg, Vladivostok. It's a myth that Russia has no warm water ports. Also, a warm water port in Syria is kind of pointless given that it's not connected to the Russian mainland. It's main purpose is as a base for mediterranean operations.
Vlad is way in the east, Murmansk must be at least partial ice(?) -
and while I am not all that familiar with any of them; St Petersberg is a long way in the Baltic Sea,
and Russian military ships have to go past Norway and Britain.
I take your point-I should have said "warm water ports with access to the Mediterranean / ME and international sea lanes.
But I wouldn't underestimate Tartus's strategic location with new upgrades, and new Russian domination of Syria
assuming the damn war ever ends.
Ataturk rebelled against the Ottoman peace treaty and destroyed the Greeks intent on ethnically cleansing his homeland. Ataturk was a true hero.
The Turks are descendants of Anatolian Greeks, there is nowhere back for them to go to.
Thanks to climactic warming, won't most Russian ports be ice-free soon?
