Banning certain words, images...

Its always been the conservative churches that led movements to ban books, like Harry Potter and when I was in school... the Catcher in the Rye, Slaughter House 5, Forever...
LOL PeeCee language is now a conservative proposition?

It certainly goes both ways. Would you really argue that conservatives have not tried to ban or limit things based on what they thought was offensive?
No, and that's my point. Banning shit is a tool for extremists on both sides. Wouldn't you agree that re-writing a classic to peecee language is the work of an extremist, in this case a liberal extremist? :)

No one is attempting to have "this or that banned".

Uhm... yes they are. I cited three examples in the OP.

One would hope that an appeal to one's sense of decency and civility would dictate that folks would edit themselves not to be offensive. That's the peculiar thing about insults and derogatory remarks. You don't get to dictate what another finds offensive or derogatory.

The Constitution doesn't give you the right to not be offended, sorry. It does give you the inalienable right to free speech. If I can't dictate (or determine) what is or isn't offensive, how can I expect to mold and shape society around an unknown? If offensiveness is purely left to the individual, then any number of things can be deemed 'offensive' and banned. I could find your remarks to me offensive, and have you removed from my internet... you don't get to dictate what is offensive, remember?

It must be that it's your quest to insult or offend...and you suppose that places you in some kind of control. I'd say you were a candidate for some serious therapy.

No need for therapy, I know what the Constitution says.

Homosexuals hardly "hijacked" the word gay...it had been used for years in the 20's and 30's and became prevalent in the 50's as the kinder and gentler reference to homosexuals.

Actually, in the 20s and 30s, as well as the 40s, 50s, and 60s, the word "gay" meant happy, festive, joyous. It wasn't really until the 80s that "gay" became a common word used to describe homosexuals. But now... what if I was a rough-neck cowboy, like in Brokeback Mountain, and it offended me as a homo to be called "gay?" If individuals get to determine what is offensive, how is it you can dictate that "gay" isn't offensive? I don't get that.

Pardon me, but your rhetoric is that of a bigot, a homophobe and clearly, "a racist". No one died and gave gays the right to decide what we wanted to be called. We took it. And if you say the wrong thing, you might...just might find yourself with a speech impediment....a fist in your mouth. Personally, I don't play that. Be you man or woman, if you put yourself out there, then you accept the consequences for your mouth and your actions....And apparently, you're stuck in the past. The Confederate flag is a symbol of shame for the United States of America, and the Stars and Stripes represent who and what we are. Get a grip....But what could you expect from a redneck from Slapout, Alabama...y'all still lynching negroes down there? You better be doing in the cover of darkness and stealth, you pathetic, pathological , Un-American miscreants.

"One would hope that an appeal to one's sense of decency and civility would dictate that folks would edit themselves not to be offensive." ...Someone posted that once, and I thought I might share it with you.

And you lie. There is no impetus to remove "certain words" from historical literature. That was a rumor, which you failed to research for truth.
And then you want to call yourselves "Christians", and completely lose sight of "The Golden Rule"....Do unto others, and you'd have them do unto you. I can gladly reciprocate, whatever.

Not a rumor, I think in the case of Huck Finn, the guy actually published the book... a published book is not a rumor. And I don't call myself a Christian... I am "offended" that you would say that. One would hope that an appeal to one's sense of decency and civility would dictate that folks would edit themselves not to be offensive....just sayin.

Are you serious? What can you possibly find disagreeable about the sentence you quoted?

Unless you are just ignorant white trash.

Please respond with an actual argument, if you can.

Damo.
Would you please have people stop using phrase like "ignorant white trash", is it is a racists slur.
Thank you

I actually support you on your stance on removing the word "niger" from Huck Finn. Sure it's an offensive word. Hell it was an offensive word when Twain published it. It was meant to be offensive. Huck Finn is not a kiddy story. A sound educator can use this word as a teachable moment. They can use that as an example of how racism had a degenerative affect on southern culture of that time period and how that in a book that is populated almost entirely by characterrs that are villians, skallywags, theives and con artist there is only one noble and morally redeeming character in the whole damned book. Jim! To change the word "niger" to "slave" in Huck Finn is to entirely miss this point and to change the intent of the author and that borders on blaspheme in my eyes.

I agree totally. If the word is removed then we have altered a masterpiece. Do we put clothing on great works of art like The Thinker? Of course not.

That's not true. Parent groups do waaaaay more challenges to ban literature in libraries then religous groups do.

I think it does more then just show how people talked- It shows how people felt and treated black American's- the "N" word was so common that it was a part of every day vernacular. Leaving works, like Huck Finn, in their original form secures the truth of our national shame. To remove words or change them, to be more PC, whitewashes history <excuse the pun>.

I essentiall agree and I do not condone such revisions of classics like Huck Finn but I do think an educator has to be aware of how strikingly and painfully offensive and hurtfull that word is to a large segment of our population and that this should be broached and discussed by the educator as to the ironic context in which Twain used this word.

Both liberals and conservatives have attempted to control what we see or read.

Yes, the examples you listed were attempts by conservatives. But the attempt to make the language in Huck Finn politically correct is a liberal one.
I don't think your factually correct there Winter. As I understand it the publisher who made this revised version of Huck Finn available is a Christian Book Publisher from Alabama, who though I think they have good intentions, has done something I strongly disagree with.

Well if the shoe fits trailer park boy! ;)

Can we also eliminate the phrase "trailer park", as it is normally used to demonize poor people who live in those parks.
The word "shoe" is also unacceptalbe, since it is used in the childs poem of "The Old Woman Who Lived In A Shoe"; which is about an unmarried woman who had more children then she with what to do.
I shouldn't even have to explain why the use of "boy" should be stopped.

Show a little civility......poet sucks mens dicks and we know there is nothing offensive about that.......hes our very own little teabager in chief....

Oh, yes it does. You can go to jail for cussing in public, and the charge would more than likely be "disorderly conduct"....so your right to freedom of speech does have caveats, much to your chagrin.

No, bitch..you need therapy. Everybody can see.

And you're an idiot. Gay has had several meanings and usages, as has many words in the English lexicon. It wasn't in the "80's that the word came to describe homosexuals...I told you that it was in the 20's. If you knew anything about high society, the Harlem Renaissance or anything outside of your hick life, you'd understand. And you're an insensitive asshole. Where do you get off saying anything and not worrying if you're being offensive. What kind of cretin does that? A bitter, dried up, cantankerous, selfish, self-centered bitch, that's who. Needless to say, you have very few friends, and your family doesn't like you.

Therein lies the problem. You think that you are your higher power. I hope I'm nearby when you draw your last breath...so I can see you capitulate, and call on God. Never fails.

Was that a "backhanded solicitation"? You don't know that for a fact. But if I did, it wouldn't be your stubby pencil, requiring me to go out and get a looking glass to find it.
Do you muff dive? Some folks would think that's offensive, especially if the muff hasn't been washed in a while. But some folks don't care where they put their mouths.....look what flies out of it.

Well, you seem to be a little huffy for some reason.........are you offended by that act, deny it.....?....show some self esteem poet...you don't wear a mask while parading in the "gay pride parade" do you...

Muff dive...offensive ? Is it ? Some people don't care where they put their penis either....right ? But then nature did make a special place for it.....

Well, I didn't get the title "Best, this side of the Mississippi, for nothing. Let's just say that. Again, are you "hitting on me"? You're SOL. Indeed, nature did make a special place for it...right next to your cojones. Unless invited.

Why do you feel the urge to protect poet's backside? are you his personal pocket pussy?

You libtards are all alike, you hate the N word just like hating someone being called a faggot or queer.

Let alone the one word no libtard understands is the word "No". I would say that is due to your upbringing and never being told what to do. I bet if you were ever told "NO" you probably had a little temper tantrum like the ones we read about from you and Poet here on the boards.
