Bankrupt detroit gives billionaire new sports arena

I applaud this step as it not only looks at crime data, but also quality-of-life issues.

It's not stop and frisk.

How I wish people would just admit whats happening to black people under this stupid assed policing method.

How can the police be seen as anything but a harassment in a persons life if every day they are treated like they are about to commit a crime.

Im so sick of stupid people.

What would REALLY help Detroit, both in terms of crime and in terms of city services, would be neighborhood consolidation. Because of the size and relative population density, it'd be better to take sparsely populated neighborhoods and relocate the residents into more densely populated ones. This would reduce the burden on city services, and make it easier for police to patrol. Additionally it would make tax collection easier.

I heard the other day you could fit San Francisco, Manhattan and one other city I can't think of all inside Detroit from a land mass perspective (they were describing how large Detroit is).

But then again, there are people like you good sister. People like you move this issue from being black vs white to the realm of people of conscience vs those who don't have it.

This is a horror show that has been running for hundreds of years .. almost hopeless. But it is people just like you my friend who give African-Americans hope that one day this horror will end.

Some good news for you sister ..

many many of the young people coming up will JUST NOT allow this to move into the future.

They will toss this shit on the trash heap were it should have been placed the second it was started.

Now you need a commissioner like Ray Kelly or Bill Bratton to come in and clean house and run it.

I think COMPSTAT will help... It would help more if the city were more condensed.

But it's a good start.

Compstat started here in 1995 under Giuliani and Bratton:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CompStat

Chief of New York City Transit Police William J. Bratton was later appointed Police Commissioner by Rudolph Giuliani, and brought Maple's Charts of the Future with him. Not without a bit of struggle, he made the NYPD adopt it after it was rebranded as CompStat, and it was credited with bringing down crime by 60%. There was a CompStat meeting every month, and it was mandatory for police officials to attend. The year after CompStat was adopted, 1995, murders dropped to 1,181. By 2003, there were 596 murders—the lowest number since 1964.

I have never been prouder of the people in my neighborhood and what I had just witnessed.

nothing before has ever made me realize just how fucked up our country really is, when an otherwise rational adult can state that he was never prouder of his neighborhood then when they fired at police officers from rooftops and buildings....makes me sort of glad that Detroit is going down......I hope it never comes back....

How can you be proud of this BAC? The use of violence did one thing only in Detroit. It destroyed the ethnic diversity of the City. in 1967 the city was approximately 60% White and 40% Black. Now it is almost 85% Black and approximately 9%-10% White..

The Riots only served to segregate the black community from all other Ethnic Groups. Is this what was desired? Was the Objective to take over the entire city? To make it Black only? If so the Riots did only one thing, set back race relations 20 years.

Now we have an interesting side note...Whites are moving back into Detroit in the Corktown neighborhood. And they are being harassed and taunted by others. The African Americans are trying to drive out the White "Hipsters" as they are known. Is this not the very racism that prompted the 1967 riots in the first place? Why is the African American community displaying the Hatred they fought against 46 years ago? The Riots accomplished one thing, the carved a huge scar across the racial fabric of the city, Damaging race relations beyond repair it seems.

Read the Article....

http://www.deadlinedetroit.com/arti...trification_in_southwest_detroit#.Uf4x9azzOV4

Detroit News columnist Neal Rubin writes about a battle between locals and hipster/gentrification folks in Southwest Detroit.

He writes:

Whoever painted anti-hipster graffiti on at least four buildings in the area over the weekend didn’t provide a lot of detail. But in what appears to be a locals-vs.-hipsters turf war, this could be just the tip of the spray can.

Respect Our Roots,” read one advisory, in orange, on the side of a defunct party store at Bagley and 18th Street. “Stop Gentrification in Detroit,” said another, in black. “This Is Southwest Go Home,” declared a third, in red. There was a fairly standard Spanish vulgarity — a bit of local color in a heavily Latino district — and then there was “HIPSTER,” in red, circled, with a slash through it.

Here you have groups of young whites coming in and fixing up abandoned shops and houses, spending money and trying to make the community better and the Blacks and Hispanics tell them to "GO HOME" and tell them they are not welcome? Seems that when neighborhoods improve the Property Taxes go up.. Gentrification has that effect. So the people that have lived there since the 1970's would rather see low property taxes and have things continue on as they have? That is insanity.

BAC... If the people in Corktown act like this whats going to happen when gentrification comes to other areas of the City? Will the Riots break out again? Will racial tensions once again spill over and consume the new businesses and homes in flames? the scars from 1967 still show on the landscape and in the actions of the people. These young hipsters are just trying to make a life for themselves and because they are white or they are Gay/Lesbian and dress different they are being harassed?

Irony is this.... The Blacks that experienced the Racism and profiling and Corruption of the Police in 1967 are now themselves the Police of 1967. And they are paying it back on a few Whites/Gays and Lesbians who dare move in to Southwest/Corktown.

The servant has become the master and it is just as ugly as it was before.. They are unwilling to compromise.

I am .. sort of.

If the world was perfect I wouldn't have that confusion.

I still don't want to see them in the hands of youth, but as the right keeps pushing for armed conflict in this country, it mentally puts me in the same place that I was that night as a teenager.

If you called me a hypocrite on this issue, I would agree with you.

Just curious is all.
