Back from Afghanistan

I've always been a horrible runner. I'm a damn fine sprinter, which is useful, but I have zero endurance for running.

i meant run as in... a bad run of luck. not actual running (in case people don't get my language)

Where is there desert in Afghanistan? I thought it was steppe land, like CO...

;)

Welcome back, Marine.

The south and west are desert with mountains here and there. A lot like south eastern california (29 Palms).

I saw very few pockets of grass, water, trees, plants, etc.. where I was and where I patrolled.. which was in the Delaram area, (northwestern helmand, eastern nimruz provinces).

Its mainly covered in a very fine powder'd dust, we called it moon dust and its everywhere you go. You sleep in dust. Eat in dust. Everything in dust.

It didnt get too cold where i was during the winter. Got below freezing a few nights, high's in the lower 60's during the day..

Just a very very poor part of the world... nothing redeemable about it.

BTW, congrats on making it in the Corps. I'm too much of a wimp to have gone into the Marines, so I had to settle for Air Force. All I can do is boast that my dad served in the Corps (1965-69)...

Hey,

Long tour in the desert has finally come to pass. All my detachment made it through without injury and all with a successful completed mission.

You can be proud of your Marines.

Good to be back in the States.

Welcome back home dude! It's so great to hear your back and that you and you're colleagues are all in one piece and that you've succeeded in your mission. I think I can speak for everyone here (well most everyone) how greatfull we are for your service to our Country. Welcome home!!! :)

Join the Marine Corp Sarge. They'll teach you how to run.

Meh, at this point, I'm just going to try and push myself harder and harder to get into decent shape, and then shoot for top shape. This way, if some dumb drunken soldier (or sailor) tries to coldcock me in a bar while I'm grinding a couple of ladies, I don't have to rely on a Marine for protection. The only protection I want while in the company of ladies at the bar is rubber and mouth resuscitation.

Dude, most Marines can't fight.

I would suggest investing in a heart rate monitor. Concentrate on doing aerobic LSD runs using the HRM for feedback. Do that for about 3 months till your biomechanics come around.

Of course having some rabid 200 lb Gunnie chaging up behind your slow ass is a pretty good motivator too......but I prefer the HRM.

Yeah, sometimes I do windsprints, and I've also been told that the heart rate setting on an exercize bike is good. I just need to keep up the interval training. Since I have easy access to my college, instead of just running the track, I also need to run up and down the Grand Staircase on occassions, the way many of the runners do.
