I've always been a horrible runner. I'm a damn fine sprinter, which is useful, but I have zero endurance for running.
i meant run as in... a bad run of luck. not actual running (in case people don't get my language)

Dude, most Marines can't fight.Meh, at this point, I'm just going to try and push myself harder and harder to get into decent shape, and then shoot for top shape. This way, if some dumb drunken soldier (or sailor) tries to coldcock me in a bar while I'm grinding a couple of ladies, I don't have to rely on a Marine for protection. The only protection I want while in the company of ladies at the bar is rubber and mouth resuscitation.

I would suggest investing in a heart rate monitor. Concentrate on doing aerobic LSD runs using the HRM for feedback.
