At what point do you have a right to shoot someone dead?

Out of curiostiy, if throwing popcorn is grounds for drawing a gun on a person, what kind of response does someone drawing a gun on you merit? Tactical nuclear device deployment?

it doesn't matter WHAT was thrown, it's an issue of being assaulted by another physical object.

Would you be charged for drawing your gun? I think the cop would also face an inquiry if he drew his gun and would face murder charges if he fired.

I don't think I would feel frightened by someone knocking at 3 am. The fact that they are announcing their presence would make me feel more at ease. Now if I saw someone at my window or door, not knocking that would concern me much more.

So, clearly there is a place where you have a right to kill... like say you are backed into an alley being threatened with a gun. And there is a place where you have no right to kill in self defense... like say your waitress spills soup on your lap.

But where is the line? At what point do/should you have a right to shoot?

off the top of my head:

1) someone violating your person. If someone punches me, I have the right to kill them
2) breaking into a home. instant death

that's a good place to start

STY takes the view that having popcorn throw at him is sufficient provocation for him to draw his gun. Do you agree? If so, what response does have a gun drawn on you merit?

Depends on a myriad of things. What lead to the popcorn being thrown, body language, tone, am I seated or standing, is the thrower potentially armed, on drugs, etc. There are hundreds of different things that go into a decision to draw a firearm. So with that caveat in mind, I say maybe.

If I'm in the throwers shoes my reaction to having a gun pointed at me is the same as it's been in the past. Try to calm the situation down. I'm certainly not stupid enough to attack someone who's drawn on me even if they're in the wrong. In either case I'm going to try and defuse the situation peacefully because frankly I don't want to be shot and I don't need to have my carry gun "lost" in police evidence.
