I was thinking the same thing. A war veteran just out of the service should have the instincts to find a vulnerable spot, get his attention and put a bullet in his head.

And this is just one of the reasons why I find the entire "story" to be nothing else then made up and bullshit.

There you go again, making assumptions. Dude, I know many men who served in the Middle East wars of late.

Some of them came home, hit the turf a runnin', blended back into civilian life, became an instant leader, and made an instant favorable impression on everyone. While I've known some others who were so affected by their combat experiences in negative ways, that they immediately fell into drugs, alcohol, depression, personality disorders such as PTSD, and depression.

And for some of these ex-service men coming home, guns are about the worst thing they could have in their personal possession.

And I'm thinking this was the case for my friend, because I know he would still be here with us today, had he not had a gun in his possession.

After your made up "story", this is nothing more then you trying to save face from making such a bold faced lie; because any service man "who had served in Afghanistan" would not just have forgot everything he was taught and trained for and one of those lessons is to put yourself into defensible positions.
And being behind someone, who has a gun, and pointing a gun at them, is a defensive position.
Plus any sudden movement, from the criminal, would have automatically resulted in the ex-service man placing several shots into the criminal.
