Jimmy Carter wrote a book about the Revolutionary War - fiction - "The Hornet's Nest". And while he probably should stick to non-fiction, what struck me in that book is just HOW HARD it was do do stuff back then. I live in a rural area; but I have chain saw, weed whacker, generators. When I need something done like digging a trench or building a fence, I can hire people who have the right tools for the job. Reading his book which really went into what it took to homestead - to kill the trees, chop them down; to build the house; to clear the land; to dig a well; etc. UGH. No central heat and a/c; no refrigeration beyond a cold cellar dug into the ground; and doctors? Had to travel awhile to find one. Couldn't just go to the store if you were running low on shirts and pants; had to sew them yourself.
Cold Mountain had some similar stuff in it.
I enjoy reading about this stuff, because I know how hard it is even with modern tools. I laugh when I read a book where they just lit a campfire in 2 seconds flat... it's harder than that.
Learned a lot from a book about the Donner party; to start a fire on snow, they first laid down a layer of dry wood, then did the fire on top of that...used that when we were camping one time in a damp area. But when they talked about having to hack a trail (because they tried a new route that wasn't already laid out) and how it took all day to go maybe a mile - I totally understand because it's so hard to clear brush out here.
Yeah, life was TOUGH. I don't take roads for granted. I don't take fire protection services for granted. Hospitals, emergency services, etc. - thank goodness we have them! Research into diseases - thank you, government! All the work they do so we don't have epidemics of measles, mumps, chicken pox, whooping cough- THANK YOU GOVERNMENT!
