Apple challenges 'chilling' demand to decrypt San Bernardino shooter's iPhone

Apple has hit back after a US federal magistrate ordered the company to help the FBI unlock the iPhone of one of the San Bernardino shooters, with chief executive Tim Cook describing the demand as “chilling”.

“The US government wants us to trust that it won’t misuse this power. But we can all imagine the myriad ways this new authority could be abused. Even if you trust the US government, once this master key is created, governments around the world will surely demand that Apple undermine the security of their citizens as well.”

The general idea is to strip ALL of the world's citizens of any security . It's their idea of a better tomorrow.

I say mass murder voids your privacy protection

But if it's mass murder, how many is enough?

Mass Murder, as defined by the FBI, is the murder of four or more people with no cooling off period between killings.

So if it's only four people, why not remove that limitation and pull the privacy for any murder? And if we're going to go that far, why not remove the requirement of murder at all, and just make it so they can pull our information for any infraction - even if it's just a traffic stop for a broken tail light?

Our rights to privacy and security from illegal search and seizure have been under attack for years, supported by the Patriot Act (which is Constitutionally illegal) and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), which says the government may do things that are Constitutionally illegal.

Of all the things that I find most frightening is the FISC. In this court, Federal judges convene in secret and Federal attorneys argue - without any opposition from an opposing side (because none are permitted) - unopposed for the allowance of further erosion to our protected rights. That's like sending you to court, but you're not allowed to speak or defend yourself and you're not even allowed to have defense counsel.

The FISC hears a LOT of cases. In 2012 they heard more than 1,800 cases. Since its inception over 30 years ago they've heard over 34,000 cases, and rejected only 11 of them.

Now, I'm not a fan of any "slippery slope" argument, but if there's IS an argument that deserves due notice on the slippery slope, it's this one.

And the FISC rulings are secret. Even the rulings that they have said can be released to the public the Federal government has fought to keep secret.

in fact, why not go some further steps and have DNA checkpoints, where everyone is mandated to provide a DNA sample. that could go a very long way in to solving some older unsolved crimes. then, those same samples could be used to isolate known issues with criminality and we could start arresting people before they actually commit the crimes. think of how peaceful and orderly our society would be then

Gotcha

Not mine, no.

If they are restricting it to one phone then what is the problem? Why can't Apple take the phone. Open it and give it to the FBI?

I see no problem with that. They don't have to tell them how to be able to do it.

Surely Apple has the ability to get into it. There has to be a middle ground

Unless I'm reading it incorrectly Apple is required to develop a new software which facilitates opening all phones in order to open just one. The FBI wants it, of course.
So does Mugabe. ISIS too, I shouldn't wonder. Kim Jong-un would fancy a go. The - inevitable - release of such a software would compromise millions.

Republican frontrunner Donald Trump slammed Apple for contesting the court order, saying "we should open it up".

Populist prat.

You're showing some common sense, desh.....if corporate America won't help fight terrorism, they suck in my book....

Its not like the gov. is demanding they unlock every iPhone in the country,
that would be a different story.

these people are aren't terrorism suspects, they ARE terrorists......

typical statism. one criminal act should negate everyones rights. you're familiar with Ben Franklins famous quote of security over liberty?

This isn't about 'everyone's rights'.....this is about the so-called of proven undeniable terrorists.....

You're reading it correctly, they are being asked to develop an iOS to update that one phone with, so that the FBI can then try an unlimited number of password combinations without bricking the phone.

Implicit with that request is the astonishing idea that the FBI would not immediately copy the altered software so that they can access the information on any iPhone.

Does anyone, anyone at all, actually believe the FBI wouldn't reverse-engineer that version of iOS the second they had it in their hands? Honestly, does anyone believe that?

What I just said makes it about everyone's rights.

I am not an Apple fan, and have a deep dislike for their products from software to hardware (which is why my Apple Disciple wife and I simply don't discuss Apple vs Android stuff), but I give kudos to them for fighting back.

Well that I don't agree to. Truly I am not following it that closely

Of course if we kept these muslimes out of the country to begin with maybe we wouldn't be having these conversations. Just a thought.

If thats the case, I agree.

Apple should do the phone of the terrorists, get the data and surrender the data only to the FBI

Ah, well, just don't allow Muslims to have a phone. Only Christians get to make phone calls. Simple. Right Mohammed ?
