Ohio Vietnam vet shoots neighbor’s 8-month-old puppy dead in front of children

A family in Ohio is demanding justice after a neighbor shot their 8-month-old puppy to death in front of two children.

Martin Smith told WTOL that the Labrador/border collie mix named “Puppy” was running to greet the two boys as they got home from Sunday school on Sunday. That’s when 64-year-old Vietnam veteran Christopher Zimmerman pulled out a gun and shot the animal with the children looking on.

Smith said that his son “can’t get it out of his mind.”

“Noah was right there,” the father recalled. “It was really close. He thought he was gonna get shot. He didn’t know what to do, he just ran for his life.”

Although a complaint was filed last month about the puppy being off its leash, neighbors insisted to WTOL that Zimmerman had used excessive force.

“An 8-year-old boy should never have to witness anything like that,” neighbor Jan Blausey remarked. “Sunday, he couldn’t even come from upstairs.”

And now the family wants to know why Zimmerman was only charged with inducing panic and injuring an animal.

On her blog, mother Misty Smith said she couldn’t understand why “the same man who would coax Puppy into his driveway would suddenly turn on him and hate him so.”

“He will appear in court [on Wednesday] at 10 AM but the only charges are inducing panic and injuring an animal. That doesn’t get him help that gets him nothing and we are left with the mess,” she added. “What I need is someone who can help us make him get help someplace away from a school and a family with 7 children. I cannot get them another puppy as long as that man is there.”

“He is a veteran whose wife has to tell him over and over, ‘the war is over’. He needs help before someone is hurt worse. There has to be something that can be done.”

Another Bathtub NUT tries to drown her baby

http://www.wistv.com/story/19324323/police-1-year-old-boy-nearly-drowns-while-getting-a-bath

Clearly we must ban bathtubs. Too many people try to drown their kids in them.

I mean - who knew that if you use something irresponsibly something bad could happen?

We must ban them all to prevent the irresponsible people from hurting their babies.

How can we live with ourselves if we don't restrict everyone from using bathtubs due to the potential for harm caused by the irresponsible few?

Of course SF's response has nothing to do with the topic of the OP...but having an honest discussion is just something that doesn't happen here.

You have no desire for an honest discussion. You just want to yet again post a thread about someone doing something bad with a gun in order to justify your obsession with putting more regulations on ALL gun owners.

"stand your ground" has nothing to do with the incident.

Your post is about an irresponsible man killing a dog, SF's is about an irresponsible women endangering a person......

so the real topic is irresponsible people causing problems.....so he is spot on.

(unless you really meant to discuss animal cruelty), idiot

FWIW Zap, you scouring rawstory or addictinginfo (I think that's the other site you like) looking for random gun stories you think will make gun owners/supporters look bad has about as much effect as RacerX posting a crime story and a picture of the suspected black criminal.

If you:

1) Don't like guns
2) Don't like current gun laws
or
3) Both of the above

that is your right. If your desire is to get people to think differently about guns I'd argue there are better ways to go about it than finding these one off stories and essentially claiming all gun owners to be like them.

Damn. We definitely need to increase funding for mental health programs, for veterans AND non-veterans.

Shooting a gun around children if the dog wasn't threatening them is seriously warped.

That's it...put those amazing mental powers to work telling everyone what it is I want.

They refuse to discuss the growing problem of nuts with guns killing the innocent.

All they ever bring is derision and evasion.

...oh and those Amazing Mental Powers!

I don't think I've ever claimed that ALL gun owners are like the guy who shot the puppy.

The title of this thread is "Another gun nut"...singular not plural.

Until people who are pro gun are willing to some kind of increased regulation, the senseless deaths will continue.

Try explaining that to the gun nuts populating these boards...it's a sure fire method for getting shouted down.

Of course I've done no such thing, but I have come to understand there is no honest debate when trying to discuss guns with gun nuts like NOVA.

I'd argue again, in my unasked for opinion, that you should state what type of regulation you believe would have prevented this. The only way to make sure we have zero gun deaths is to ban and destroy all guns on Earth. I don't think any of us think that will realistically happen. So with that what regulation(s) will ban senseless deaths?

Do you really expect to have an 'honest discussion' with any gun supporter when you start off your first sentence with 'gun nuts'? I'm far from a debate expert but I know that if I really want to talk with someone opening with an insult usually isn't the best way to go about it.

That was the 13th post in the thread.

By the time I wrote that, I had already received a response from SF claiming to know "what I really meant" and one from NOVA filled with his standard derisive attacks.

I understand it makes the pro gun crowd uncomfortable to read over and over about how another "responsible" gun owner shot up his neighborhood or workplace, but the fact remains until we do something to get guns away from the crazies like the puppy killer, this kind of thing will continue and derisively posting another retaliatory attack post about another person dying in their bathtub isn't going to stop it.

You put Gun Nut in your subject line and you've referenced gun owners as gun nuts multiple times before. Hey, you are free to write whatever the hell you want and you sure as hell don't have to listen to me. I'm just throwing out food for thought that one way to start a better conversation would be instead of using of using terms like 'gun nut' and then saying 'responsible' gun owners maybe try saying here was a gun incident that didn't need to occur and here are regulations I believe would help prevent this type of incident occurring again. Just my opinion that people are a lot more receptive to having a conversation based on that opening rather than what I first stated.

link us up to your data that shows deaths by gun are going up.

The above nonsense is why I posted the bathtub deaths. Why not increase regulation on the use of bathtubs? Maybe a certification course for parents that is mandatory so that they stop leaving kids unattended in the tub? Shouldn't everyone have to go through that due to the poor judgement of a few?
