Americans brace for food stamps to run out: ‘The greatest hunger catastrophe since the Great Depression’

Two decades ago, Sara Carlson, then a mother of three, was newly single because of a traumatic event, and the US’s food stamp program, now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap), helped her feed her children with free food supplies.

“I wouldn’t have been able to afford to live,” said Carlson, 45, who lives in Rochester, Minnesota, and now works as an operations manager for a wealth-management firm and serves on the board of Channel One Regional Food Bank, which works to increase food access.

While the food stamps helped her, the government cut her off after a couple years because she started making too much money, which meant she again had to worry about having enough food.

Now, nearly 42 million people around the country could face the same fate if the federal government shutdown continues and funding for Snap is cut off on 1 November.

Should funding run out at the end of the month, “we will have the greatest hunger catastrophe in America since the Great Depression, and I don’t say that as hyperbole”, said Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America.

Snap supports working families with low-paying jobs, low-income people aged 60 years and older and people with disabilities living on a fixed income, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Snap participants generally must be at or below 130% of the federal poverty line. The average participant receives about $187 a month, the center reports.

My liberal friends, this move the Trump administration is making is a NEEDED move. So so so many who are getting food stamps, the majority are low wage earners, who's income qualifies them for food stamps. But a lot of families and I personally know a few, just sit on their lazy ass's and benefit solely from liberal policies and never VOTE.
Food pantries all over the country, will be inundated by this change in a few more months. WHAT TRUMP IS DOING AND I'M PRAISING HIM FOR IT, HE'S WAKING UP THIS NON VOTERS, ESPECIALLY IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY, HE'S INDIRECTLY SHOWING THE POWER OF VOTING AND THAT EVERYTHING COMES WITH A PRICE TAG. THAT IS A GOOD THING AND THE IDIOT DON'T EVEN KNOW IT. What Trump also is ignorant of, is that a vast majority on welfare.....are his white trash conservative VOTERS!!1761419697380.png

Oh Baloney!

Without Food Stamps, it will take many months before anyone is actually hungry. And then there are food banks and churches.

There was a time in America before Food Stamps, and I hope they cancel the program now and go back to the days when people had to work or go hungry.

I am a White-Male, I NEVER "Qualify" for any of the government programs, and I don't starve, I WORK!

If the government allows SNAP benefits to run out, the consequences will reach far beyond grocery store shelves. The collapse of the white self-sufficiency myth will hit hardest among many MAGA voters who are older, working-class white Americans in counties that depend heavily on federal aid programs like SNAP, Social Security, Medicare, disability, and farm subsidies. In fact, some of the highest SNAP participation rates in the country are in overwhelmingly white, Republican counties across Appalachia, the Deep South, and the Midwest.

Tell that to the disabled and single mothers.

On the ground, food insecurity would spike across MAGA country. Economists estimate that every dollar in SNAP spending generates more than a dollar and a half in local economic activity. Pull that thread, and small-town economies unravel fast. Dollar stores and small-town groceries, which rely heavily on SNAP transactions, would lose revenue and shut down. Food banks, already stretched thin, would be overwhelmed.

Poor white families who’ve long relied on the program to feed their kids would face the kind of economic desperation they’ve been taught to associate only with non-white “urban” poverty. That shock would destabilize communities already hollowed out by addiction, unemployment, disinvestment, rampant drug abuse, and climbing suicide rates.

Let's watch it happen!

Maga people already expect that they will always be denied, and they got a freak'n job!

The Single White-male Fathers all got a job, so can the single mothers.

I was disabled by a work place accident, and I've never stopped working!

You want to eat, get a freak'n job!

Many SNAP recipients are employed, particularly in low-wage jobs, with about 60% of SNAP households with children and a non-elderly, non-disabled adult having earnings. These benefits supplement income for those who are working but still struggling with food insecurity, providing crucial support and acting as an economic stimulus during downturns.

Why would the Democrats do this to those people?

No more HO HO's and ding dongs for snap recipients. When this is over it is only basic staples for them from now on. Meat, veggies, fruit,...ect ect . Food stamps were never meant to buy unhealthy soda and snacks. If they want those things......WORK. Afterall,...like the old saying goes,...beggars cant be choosers.

Deport the 14M Biden illegals and there will be allot more jobs for the Starving ex-Snapers.

And the annual budget will drop by $1T/year and we won't need to give the damn Democrats their demand for ANOTHER $1.5T / Year.

And the very best thing, all of those "Program Adminstrators" who used to get six figure salaries will be out looking for an honest job!

Slash Food Stamps and SNAP right out of existence!

Get a Job or Starve!

I am looking forward to the skinny corpses stacked like cord-wood. That looks like a balanced budget and a surviving America to me. Call the stacks of the Ex-Snap Dead Progress!

I love the smell of Ex-Snap Dead in the morning!

There are plenty of jobs now.

There are approximately 7.2 million job openings nationwide, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS).
