So when a hetero beats up a homo it's a "hate crime", and when a homo beats up a homo it's not a "hate crime". I see. But what if the other homo was really "hating" the other homo during the altercation?

When does it cross over to a "hate crime"? There seems to be no criteria other than an opinion of someone's state of mind.

What if the 5 attackers are made up of 2 Christians, 1 Jew, and 2 Muslim homos? When does it become a "hate crime"?

Precisely, Hate crimes are pretty much reserved for white christians doing something to non white christians. For more on interesting hysteria, please check out the wonderful number of university racist incidents that turned out to be victim perpetrated.
