I suspect the separate gender competitions are to encourage more women to play, or it could just be a Muslim thing.
 
Women can participate in the general tournament and there are a few great female chessmasters. The purpose of the women's tournament is to promote female participation in chess.
 
Compare to other fields like baseball, there are going to be exactly zero female baseball players who can play on a professional level - because you're already picking a team of male outliers, there just aren't any women who are such fantastic outliers that they can compete there. If chess were similar to that, there would be no female grandmasters at all. The fact that there are, but there are only few, suggests that women just don't participate in it, rather than women being inherently inferior.

I've heard the idea that men are better at spatial relationships. It definately helps to be able to"see " the board.

I'm sure you know of blindfold chess - i've played guys, and they tell me the way they do it,
it to try to steer the game into a line they know..I can't do it -i take their word.

I suspect this is another "nature vs.nurture" debate with no clear answer.

HAHAHA. So why do they insist on having their own tournaments that prohibit men??? Men don't do that. Their tournaments are open to both sexes.

Yes, except I doubt it's a binary, one or the other.

Instead, I suspect it's both, and thus a quibble over ratio (which probably varies on individual basis).

They're probably overlapping bell-curves. The most spacially adept female is probably more spacially adept than the least spacially adept male.
