They aren't just concerned. They are actively moving to make these things happen if they can. California has already mandated smart thermostats in all new construction and that was several years ago. The Bribem administration issued final rules on gas appliances, only to have to reconsider when their plan was exposed and they met massive backlash from Congress, consumers, and manufacturers. That doesn't change they were trying to actually implement this plan.

In California you no longer have the option to buy and use a non-connected thermostat on new construction or remodeled homes. California won't pass building inspections and your permit to build could be pulled.

And, yes this is Orwellian in nature. The Internet of Things has reached a point where it is possible, but not necessarily being done yet, where your thermostat and any other 'smart' device in your house from a light bulb to doorbell, to TV could be collecting data on you and returning it to the government. The government could then use your preferences against you when they wish. Hackers can do the same thing as criminals.

Actually, your example is stupid. In N. Korea they don't have the Internet virtually anywhere. There is no interconnectivity of devices. Hell, many buildings and homes don't even have electricity. N. Korea may be massively controlling, but it isn't Orwellian, it's Stalinist.
