ACLU - Billions of Dollars Wasted on Racially Biased Marijuana Arrests

It's time to end the War on Marijuana.

The aggressive enforcement of marijuana possession laws needlessly ensnares hundreds of thousands of people into the criminal justice system and wastes billions of taxpayers’ dollars. What’s more, it is carried out with staggering racial bias. Despite being a priority for police departments nationwide, the War on Marijuana has failed to reduce marijuana use and availability and diverted resources that could be better invested in our communities.

one of my questions is - is it really about stopping drugs or is it actually about funding police and sheriff departments?

Nothing in the link or your statement showed me anything about "racial bias". I suppose I know what you are getting at. Profiling always happens. I was happy to see the Right Wing learn something about profiling recently, I think they will learn from it.....................aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahaha aaaaaaaahaha......jk, they won't learn. It's 2013 and they didn't yet, they wont.

Usage rates are the same but blacks are 3.7 times more likely to be arrested.

i have been a long time advocate for legalizing recreational drugs along with stringent laws for misuse of said drugs like driving under the influence

the war on drugs is worse than the war on terror as far as effectiveness is concerned. also, there is the corrupting effect on law enforcement.

so should marijuana be legal for folks under 18? If not why not? It is so innocuous and safe it shouldn't be a problem.

Any here have any problem toking one up in front of their 12 year old and letting them take a hit of the bong?

Should follow alcohol and tobacco laws.

Because pot does lead to "altered states", I'm assuming we would require them to wait till they are adults.

However, my parents let me have sips of their drinks; I imagine some parents will let their kids have a hit or two. My parents never gave me puffs of their cigarettes though.

it is not that minors cannot access recreational drugs, but if they are legal for adults it just would make it harder for minors to get them. there will always be dishonest merchants that will sell to them. the upside would be the dismantling of drug sales networks which would reduce sales to minors as the penalties would be too severe for the possible profit.

The war on drugs is a colossal waste of money. Not sure this is breaking news as it has been for decades. The racial disparity in arrests and convictions should have had this ignorant war on drugs destroyed 20 years ago.

Legalize drugs, tax them, penalize those who drive or cause harm to others while under the influence of them in a harsh manner. Eliminate any excuse by users to blame the drug for their actions or to claim victomhood if they become addicted.

I am not so sure about legalizing "Drugs" per se, but definitely marijuana.

well, you know how it is, keeping them illegal doesn't stop crooks from getting them, just stops people who won't abuse them from getting them... oh wait, are we talking drugs or guns? (smile)

I personally think all drugs should be legal but no one should use them. If we legalize them all, we need a very strong educational campaign around them.

But then again, without the laws people might be drawn to abuse them just because their legal. Then again, how much stupidity do we need to protect against? Then again, while of course if they do something illegal while using them we'll throw their butts in jail, that's too late - the crime already happened.

Sigh. Given all that... let's legalize pot for now, see how it goes, then decide the others on a case by case basis.

Prohibition doesn't work. It simply enables the criminal element of the drug trade to thrive. My only caveat would be that if you become addicted... it is on you. Only an idiot would not be aware of which drugs had the greater chances of addiction.

Less concern than I would have with sharing alcohol with them. You claim you have reviewed all the scientific data, then you should well know that the therapeutic ratio of marijuana is too high to measure. Alcohol, not so much.

Exactly.

Obama is a fraud from top to bottom.

Anyone looking to blame republicans for this is running from the truth.
I believe he's more watching to see if America wants it!
His outright support would galvanize those pro pot republicans into weed jihadist!
