3 L.A. teachers suspended over Black History Month celebration

I saw this on the tube last night. I can't imagine what the teachers had in mind unless it was to mock BHM. Surely they weren't serious about putting these guys up as the kind of people to honor during BHM. I'm still waiting for my Indian History Month to become a reality. :)
Please... As if. Native Americans will just have to settle for caricatures at the football stadiums and be happy! Cowboys too for that matter...

I can understand that desire. Gandhi was a great example and should be someone who the kiddies at least have some knowledge of the man.

Of course you could also highlight the ever lovely Aishwarya Rai. Because well... she is smoking hot and a talented superstar in Bollywood.

Or perhaps you are wanting to tell the tale of Shah Jahan and his rule. The Taj Majal was built, the epic tale of his four sons battling out for the throne when he fell ill, his life ending during his imprisonment. etc....

Or were you perhaps meaning to refer to the native Americans?

;)

Haha....yep, I've never been too PC. I am an Indian, Choctaw Indian to be precise or American Indian to be a little more general, but an Indian nonetheless. I remember when the whole "Native American" thing began to be discussed in our area. I thought, "how stupid?" :)

I only use it so people don't halt conversation to "inform" me that it is "Native Americans"... I'm thinking, "Well, you obviously know what I was saying if you can define it so clearly now."...

It just gets annoying.

It's kind of sad and disturbing, to me, that people have to try and identify themselves in what I see as something other then Americans.

Can you imagine the uproar if whtes began calling themsleves Caucasion-Americans or European-Americans.

I don't care what race anyone is.
I do believe that we are all Americans; ie: USA.

The South and Central Americans, Mexicans and Cannuckistanis would like to salute you....

But that's why I included the distinction; because those you've mentioned are all part of North and Suuth America.
They are technically Americans; but don't usually refer to themselves as such.

Your wait is over. November is Native American Heritage Month. It has been for a decade.

Whites routinely self-identify with their ethnic group. Billions of times in my life I've heard whites self-identify as irish-americans, italian-americans, and greek-americans. And their are holidays that celebrate those european ethnic groups.

I don't get the outrage about people identifying as african-americans. Where's the equivalent outrage about people identifying as Irish-americans?

First, blacks can't identify with a specific national identity. They were brought here as slaves, and cannot identify as Nigerian-americans or Ivory-coast americans. They were kidnapped, and have no freaking idea what part of africa they came from. Second, those countries are recent constructs derived from european colonial boundaries.

Third, if any one wants to whine about black-americans broadly identifying with their african ancestory, without regard to specific national boundaries, we white dudes only have ourselves to blame. Who was it that spent 400 years lumping all blacks into one monolithic generic category, stereotype, or caricature?

White dudes. That's who did it.

I don't see the names you've mentioned, as identifying with being 'white'.
I see them as identification of countries.

The rest of your complaining is obviously nothing more then white hate or more then likely a misdirected sense of white guilt.

Your choice.

LOL, I knew it existed but when are we gonna get the type of publicity that other ethnic groups get. I should have been plainer in that regard.

Now on a serious note. I don't really get my shorts in a wad over having or not having a whole month or even a day dedicated to us Indians. On the contrary, if the accomplishments of Indians are taught as they should be in history and social studies classes that is enough. And I think it ought to be that way for all ethnic groups. But one cannot deny the disparagement of "hoopla" surrounding the different ethnic holidays and take note of which ones gain so much national attention. Why the disparity is my only question?

Now as to the OP, has anyone heard why these knuckle-headed teachers did what they did?

The only time I have ever heard this is on some movie or while watching the news. It is just not something that I hear around here. I know I am isolated but do they really refer to themselves this way that often?

These are basic facts, easily available to anyone who can force themselves to log off the sarah palin face book page, and consider for three nanoseconds the history of this country.

Black pride and african-american unity is a direct result of 400 years of oppression; and the fact that whites ourselves lumped them all into one monolithic category. They didn't do that to themselves. Segregation and the culture of this country lumped them together. And as I said, they have no freaking clue what country in africa is the source of their heritage.

Whites have never been discriminated against in any sustained way on enslaved based only on their skin color. If they had, I would fully expect there to be some form of white unity, in they way that there is a black unity or jewish unity.

As it is, whites have never had those experiences, and identify with their ethnic national roots. I've never heard you neocons express the least little bit of outrage at Saint Patty's day, or irish pride.

That's because most of 'em like to partake in drinking that goes on....wonder how many are looking forward to it? Maybe they should promote the same for BHM. :)

You have to realize that I am kidding and having fun with this thread at this point, right? ;)

I must confess, I have a suspicion that most Caucasian-Americans have no relatives from the Caucuses...

Yeah, but we want a History month. Get with the program, man! Heritage months aren't good enough!

You have to recognize that almost all of us are being obviously and jokingly sarcastic in this thread.

And I could care no less than I already so long as they recognize that they are "American"...

Sometimes it gets to me when people say, "I'm Italian." or "I'm German"... I then ask if they've ever been to Germany or Italy, and about 98% of the time you get a "no"... They aren't Italian, they are American.
