The more I observe political events unfold in America, the more I am reminded of a failing marriage. Two sides, hell-bent on destroying each other, not willing to compromise one inch, or even entertain the thought. The differences have become too irreconcilable. Societal issues are the children, as both sides fight relentlessly for full custodial rights. Taxes are the 'alimony' we'll either pay or avoid, as we plead our case before the Electoral judge who will make a ruling in early November. What will become of the assets we've worked so hard to build over the years? Will Social Security become the home which has to be liquidated and equity divided? (I hope not, because we are a little upside down at the moment.) Who will get the car? You know, that capitalist machine so vital at driving the economy? You can't divide a car, one side will prevail there, at least over the next few years.
Yep, it's as if all hope is lost. Both parties once had respect and genuine love for one another... oh sure, they had their fights and disagreements, but at the end of the day, they were Mr. And Mrs. American, through and through. And like any troubled marriage, the fault can be found on both sides. RepubliCons carried on lavish affairs with sexy corporate mistresses, as DemoLibs slipped away behind the bar with sleazy Eurotrash Marxists. Neither party has been faithful, and both have justified their actions by pointing to the failures of the other. In the end, two who once shared so much, find themselves with nothing in common.
In a marriage, the obvious event which is unfolding, is a divorce. But a country can't be divorced. A country divided means a war will have to be fought, a literal war. This is where hot heads jump in and say, "Bring It!" Or where antagonists start calling me extremist calling for war or whatever. I'm just the messenger, okay? When a country gets to the point where the two sides can't arbitrate their differences in a civil manner, they can't go and get a "divorce" from one another. I know that we have a society which now thinks of divorce as nothing, just a common formality whenever two sides can't reconcile. The ramifications of 'political divorce' are much more hostile. Just as we seem to have forgotten how to reconcile and compromise in our relationships, have we also forgotten how to reconcile and compromise on political views?
Is there some kind of counseling we can do as Liberals and Conservatives, to at least attempt to save our family? Or is it too late? Is there hope for our future, or does this devolve into civil chaos, as the divisiveness grows unbearable? It seems to me, Americans... both Liberal and Conservative, need to be taking a few steps back, and evaluating the situation at this time. We can move forward together and work with one another on the things we can agree on, and return to a more civilized debate of ideas on the things we don't, or we can continue on the destructive path we are on, with ever-more bitter sniping and attacking, until it's too late.
Perhaps it's already too late?
