Obama Regulatory Regime Nixes Teens' Farm Jobs

Kids in the family are statutorily exempted from the FLSA and no regulation can change that. This proposed regulation certainly doesn't.

Are you telling me that the IceDunce's original post was intentionally MISLEADING?

Was she fudging the facts in a blatant, partisan attempt to generate the appropriate EMOTIONAL response?

She wouldn't do that, now would she?

are you a city raised child? I was not and I worked on several farms. I found it fulfilling because it gave me a paycheck, plus I got to work in the outdoors (fresh air) as well as with the animals I loved. so what is it about children working on farms that your elitism finds abhorent?

How old are we talking here? 10, 12, 14, 16? Was it required of you or did you do it for a pay check. Are we talking forced labor as Newt was talking or was this by your own choice? I worked on a farm because the pay was better than what I would get in retail. I left the farm for a construction job, it paid better than farm work.

I don't see the poster as being elitist.

my 8 year old cousin had her own job on the farm as well......every morning and afternoon it was go feed the chickens then collect eggs. at 14, I had my own job on my uncles farm, though I actually got paid a bit for it. It wasn't minimum wage or even close, but that mattered little since it was family. when I was 16, I started driving a water tanker for the asst fire chief in our town. we sprayed nearly all the surrounding farms with pesticides. As to forced labor, who the hell does that anymore? anyone? are we sure this bill isn't a solution in search of a problem?

while at certain times you seem to have some reasonable semblance of an ability to rationally debate, other times you don't see alot of things. just my opinion, mind you, but thats what i've seen of you.

Your 8 year old cousin didn't have a job...she did what are called "CHORES". My 5 year old has to put her dishes in the sink after dinner and later on pick up her toys before bath time...neither of those is a "job" either.

Ahahahaha, when I agree with you, I can debate, when I don't agree with you I am stupid, I get it, so does everyone else. Isn't it ironic.

your first line shows that you have no intent of joining debate, just spouting off

as for farms and attendant skills required, i suspect that those kids went on to college rather than stay on the farm

if you think that farm living is so good, why do you not live on a farm and do farm work - try it some time, i have

Obviously, it was too much for you to handle. Doesn't mean any healthy person can't do it.

You have a 5-year old? Do you ever feel threatened by her intelligence?

Wow. So, small farms bad, big "1%" owned conglomerations good... Got it. You should chant that at the next Occupier camp you go by, they'll love you.

that is not what i said

in fact i think just the opposite - i am no fan of agribusiness even though it helps keep the price of food down - the loss of nutrition and increase of toxins due to agribusinesses is bad

i would like to see more organic farms developed (this is happening in ca)

dixie

i have reluctantly decided to put you on my ignore list

you have intelligence and ability yet you misuse it in your posts and when confronted retreat into obscenity

i talked to my brother don quixote and he told me that he had given up on you a while back

he does not have anyone on ignore, but life is too short to continue to waste my time reading your posts :(

goodbye

When I was 12 we got to work picking peas at a farm in washington state. My mom took all us kids (9 - 14 year olds) and dropped us off to spend the whole day picking. It was fun and it sucked all at the same time. I was a lazy picker compared to my sisters. They didn't have ADD medicine back then. LOL

I think it's shameful that our government is being used to create barriers like this. It's an assualt on liberty to deny opportunities to poor kids.

Yurt, you look like a girl in your home movie. I always figured you were a male for some reason.

so all familial relations are covered or just immediate family? Can they work on each others farms?

Just immediate family, which is the way it has been for decades.

Are they just allowed to work on their families farms or are they able to help neighbors?

Just on their family's farm, which, again, is the way it has been for decades.

I really don't think you grasp how a farming community operates.

I really don't think you grasp either what the current regulations say or how the proposed regulations will change current law and practice.

When I was a kid I walked 8 miles through 3 feet of snow to get to the factory where I worked the canning machine for six hours after school, 12 hours on weekends. And I was happy for the chance! Happy!

DOL regs would NOT stop children from working on family farms. Just as Child Labor laws do not apply to parents who make their 11 year olds mow their grass

You think you had it rough?

I used to have to get up in the morning at 10 o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed...

Eat a lump of hot gravel, go down and work 27 hours a day at the mill and when we came home, our father would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah!

But we were happy!
