Tuned In: 'All-American Muslim' shows Islam's many faces
Sunday, November 13, 2011
By Rob Owen, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Perhaps putting on a pro-social program like "All-American Muslim" is TLC's effort to atone for saddling the nation with the drama of "Jon & Kate Plus 8."

Or maybe it's just a show that fits the network's theme of depicting American families from all walks of life. Whatever the reason, "All-American Muslim" (10 tonight) may be an eye-opener for some viewers.

Filmed in Dearborn, Mich., which viewers are told is "the No. 1 most concentrated community of Muslims outside the Middle East," this docu-series follows six extended families who practice their faith in different ways. That might be the most important thing about this first episode: It debunks the notion some viewers might have that followers of Islam are a monolith.

The first person viewers meet, Shadia Amen, is a self-described rebel in her family with plenty of tattoos to prove it.

"I've read the Koran three times," she says. "Do I choose to follow all of that? Not so much."

Her Irish-Catholic fiance Jeff McDermott chooses to convert to Islam before their wedding and much of the first episode centers around that decision and the impact it has on Shadia's family and Jeff's mom, who worries about the break in continuity of family tradition. Credit the show for allowing her to express her fears and worries; "All-American Muslim" does not shy away from the notion that accepting change -- in a family but it could just as well be in American society -- can be difficult at first.

Sharia has gotten into his head. He's witless and weak. It's hilarious.

Another one of the abject cowards like Alias...

Tennessee GOP Rep.: There should be no Muslims in the military

One would be hard pressed to find Tennessee State Rep. Rick Womick (R) having any Muslim friends.

On Veterans’ Day, Womick told Think Progress that troops who practice Islam should not be allowed into the United States military.

“Personally, I don’t trust one Muslim in our military because they’re commanded to lie to us through the term called Taqiyya,” he told TP reporters Eli Clifton and Lee Fang. “And if they truly are a devout Muslim, and follow the Quran and the Sunnah, then I feel threatened because they’re commanded to kill me.”

“You believe that should be forced out?” asked Clifton.

Womack replied: “Absolutely, yeah.”

This isn’t the first time Womack has shown absolute hate towards Muslims. This past July, he warned his fellow colleagues in the Tennessee statehouse that Islam was a threat to their lives.

Its just been pointed out to you that it does exist, fool...

Its a pretty good guess that you were that kid in sort yellow bus using the plastic spoon....you're pathetic.

I want to see the info on those Shari'ah law cases from somewhere besides right wing blogs, but haven't been able to find it yet. Info means a court decision along with case number, not an opinion. Furthermore, I'd like to see a Shari'ah case that overrode American law, and not because of jurisdiction or some other legal consideration.

You'll have to ask Alias about case numbers and such.........

His claim....Americans are reacting to lawyers requesting rulings based on sharia law, and local judges agreeing to make them. This has happened in a New Jersey divorce case, a Maryland child custody case, and most recently in a Florida property case. These cases are now a precedent for other American-Muslim communities. In addition, according to the Center for Security Policy study that was published in May 2011, there are actually over fifty Appellate Court cases from 23 states that all involve conflicts between sharia law and American state law.

You mis-state the OP....
No one claims Shari overrode US law that I see....

There have been some incredible morons post on JPP in the past but Aliass gives them all a run for the money. I mean....how fucking stupid can you get?

Is anyone here a psychologist? Can you answer me why are these right wingers so afraid of everything. Why do they have to look under their bed at night to make sure there's not a communist, black, Jew, illegal immigrant or a Muslim hiding under their bed? Why are they so innately cowardly like Aliass here? I really fell bad for these poor sad creatures who go through life being afraid of everything. It's so sad.

It's the same fear lefties exhibit. Replace Muslims with corporations and it's almost verbatim.

Where did it go wrong? Well....maybe you didn't notice......BUT THERE IS NO SHARIA LAW IN THE USA!!!!

There never, ever has been. This is a made up controversy to get bigots, who are afraid of their own shadows, to openly promote the legitimizing of descrimination against people who worship one of the worlds great relgion!

Radical Islam in the US? Holy shit! For every 1 radical Muslim in this nation there are tens of thousands of evengelical religious nut jobs who present a far greater threat to personal freedom in our nation. What Alias posted is not only stupid in the extreme, it's just plain bigoted.

Sharia Law decision in US that was fortunately overturned on appeal. The only one discriminated against in this case was the woman. You can pretend all you want to that there are no radical Muslims in THIS country attempting to subvert our laws- but it does not make it so. The same push by Muslim's to subvert laws is happening in Europe and in Canada as well.

You are the one getting hysterical and exaggerating the concern- not Alias and not the article he posted.

It only took a few radical Muslims in every single act of terrorism to murder hundreds and in some cases thousands of lives... How many was it again that killed 3000 American's in 2001 in the US?

Just because one judge made a stupid decision does not mean that Sharia law is on the rise in the US. I have had stupid trial court judges rule that because the cop had a "Gut feeling" that a crime had been committed, his warrantless search was ok. Doesn't mean the 4th amendment was in danger, only meant that I had to go to an appeals court and slap that bitch of a judge down. I did, the appeals court ruled I was right and all was solved. The 4th amendment was not in danger of collapse because I had one judge that was willing to support any argument a prosecutor made. Same same.

No one said it was on the rise- What is being discussed in the article is the push to insert Sharia law into our justice system-

it's not a push. A judge made a bad call and got slapped down for it. There is no push in this country to get legal systems to adopt Sharia law. Funny now how conservatives are concerned with the separation of church and state.

These are the same people that get worked up about a nebulous threat whilst ignoring the very real menace posed by the religious right.

The Koran is no more the law of the US than is the bible. But when confronted with sodomy laws, and laws that are tolerant of homosexuality, social conservatives immediately turn to the bible to show why laws against homosexuality and sodomy should be allowed. If you oppose Sharia law, but support laws based SOLELY on biblical proscriptions, you are a hypocrite. Laws in the US are not to be based on either.

There is a push- Muslim's in this country and those in other counties, are trying to subvert laws based on their religion. You all can say it ain't so- but saying it does not change the facts.

"The judge's ruling comes as conservative lawmakers in Florida and around the nation are increasingly discussing legislation to ban or curtail the use of Islamic law, sometimes called sharia law, in U.S. courts". link

As an attorney yourself, you know quite well that when you wish to create precedence you do so one case at a time. How successful this push is will be determined by how willing American's are to understand the threat.

"The answer may be in a document was seized in 1982 by the Swiss government that outlined a 12 point strategy to “establish an Islamic government on earth,” identified as The Project. According to Swiss authorities, it was prepared by Islamic researchers and presented a multi phased long term approach to the cultural invasion of the West. One of those tenets was the incorporation of Sharia law into society and to use deceit as a means to accomplish it."

What is with you people? It seems that good old Joe McCarthy's ghost is alive and well and looking for new reds under the bed.

Perhaps if Christians adopted doctrines of wife beating and chopping off fingers and tongues the lefty moonbats would defend them like they do Sharia Law.
Perhaps if nut jobs like you would stop making comments like you represent all of Christianity then people wouldn't have the perception that your a blythering idiot.

Bullshit. "Lefties" is just a euphamism for what ever they don't like or don't understand or are scared of. It's a product of the Goebbelesque propaganda they've been brain washed with. If there is something you don't understand don't make an effort to understand it, just demonize it and give it a name.

Your attempt at dismissal is lame. There really was/is a communist movement in America- there really is a push to use Sharia law within our courts, as well as the courts of other Western countries.
