The issue itself however is one steeped in social conservatism. You can be liberal and still hold a social conservative view, and vice versa.

the issue is predominantly a social conservative issue, however, it goes beyond that. obama can hardly be said to hold social conservative beliefs, however, he doesn't support gay marriage and has used his admin to enforce DOMA. the issue is also simply a religious belief by many people, that means it isn't just about conservatism, it is about promoting their religious beliefs and wanting the government to enforce them.
