pretty stupid and really accomplishes nothing except setting weird precedent for recognizing non organized groups as "governments"

We recognize taiwan and always have.

Initially and yes we have formally recognized them and pledge to ensure their continuted independance.

they had a leader or some basis of government, the rebels have none...also...wiki says this (assume it is accurate)

The United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Republic of India, Pakistan and Japan have formally adopted the One China policy, under which the People's Republic of China is theoretically the sole legitimate government of China. However, the United States and Japan acknowledge rather than recognize the PRC position that Taiwan is part of China.

I know we continually pledge military support to them and have several standing trade agreements.

We supported/recognized Taiwan as the "Real China" for a time after the Chinese nationals under Chiang Kai-shek lost to the Chinese Communists under Mao Zedong, so it was more that the "Rightful Chinese government" was in exile from our view rather then nobody in the US being able to read a map

Is the recognition of the "rebels" in Libya any different to the US recognition of Israel by Truman?

Is it any different to Reagan's recognition and support for the Contras in Nicaragua? Actually, it is different as the Contras were covertly assisted by the CIA in their drugs running to provide finance for the dirty war against the elected Sandinista government.

did reagan recognize them as the legitimate government or not? why don't you ask yourself that question first.

Of course he would of, any fool knows that. The reason why he allowed the CIA to support the Contras covertly was because he knew that he would have never have got away with it legally.
