We act like this is difficult. Let those convicted of solely drug offenses out, keep the rest. Change the laws so that you don't overflow the prisons.

Just let out the drug users. Anybody in prison for using or having drugs only. Let them go.

The problem is usually not they were using drugs; but other things that were also involved.
Sales account for a lot of convictions, or multiple convictions for possession.
The plea bargains may be for possession and the other charges are no longer part of the equation.

At year end 2007 the United States had less than 5% of the world's population and 23.4% of the world's prison and jail population. It also has around 70% of the world's lawyers as well so some might say therein lies part, if not all, of the reason for the huge prison population.

Maybe we could stop incarcerating thieves and just preform amputations to curtail their behavior.
