President Trump?

Let me begin by saying, I don't believe we will awake to hear those words. I honestly do not believe Donald Trump will become the President of the United States of America. It's too bizarre to even contemplate, that we would actually elect Trump to lead the free world... but let's contemplate it anyway, just for the hell of it!

Trump would certainly set the political world on its ear, if he managed to win a couple of early primaries. He has the financial capital to promote himself in key states, and no one promotes himself better than Trump, so if he honestly wants to be president, this wouldn't be completely out of the realm of possibility. Once he establishes himself as a viable candidate, he could easily parlay that into a dogfight for the GOP nomination, and Trump has been fairly successful in getting what he wants, so again, not out of the realm of possibility.

Then we get to the General Election, and it's Obama vs. Trump, the challenger... It's almost a made-for-tv reality show in of itself, isn't it? Or heck, while we're dreaming, let's say Hillary takes out Obama and wins the Democrat nomination... Hillary vs. Trump is an even better show! Is this an outrageous thought, that it could happen? Perhaps, but it's fun and today is April Fool's Day, right?

I was somewhat surprised at a close friend of mine, who is also my mentor, and very knowledgeable about business and commerce, very conservative and old school... in a recent conversation we had about Trump considering a run for the presidency, he actually thought he might vote for him! "Are you serious?" I asked, and he proceeded to explain to me, Trump is not tied to politics, party, special interest lobbyists, etc. He knows how to organize and prioritize, and manage others. He knows business and finance. In many ways, he is a man who is custom-designed to be president of something, why not the nation?

The recent TEA Party movement is an amalgamation of various political leanings, mostly conservative to libertarian, but many independents and former blue dog democrats. The Establishment GOP seems to be hellbent on serving up Mitt Romney in 2012, against the wishes of many who comprise the TEA Party. So there is already a rift in the GOP, and the "base" is simply not going to follow the establishment to another McCain or Dole debacle. They are looking for the candidate who is going to shake things up in Washington and make the fundamental changes to government in general. Trump is an outsider, someone who would certainly shake things up and make fundamental changes. In his earliest appearances, Trump has chosen to make an issue of Obama's birth certificate, a kind of odd choice, given our current financial predicament, and given Trump's financial background. This is the one detail which makes me think, he's not really serious about being President. So, what is he doing here?

My theory is this... Trump is helping out his good friend Mitt Romney, and the northeastern GOP establishment elites. His message is designed to appeal to those Sarah Palin voters... those Huckabee religious nuts... the 'stupid people' out there in fly over country, who would consider voting for Trump instead of Palin or Huck... By siphoning off their 'base' it leaves Mitt sittin' pretty in Iowa. This is part of the GOP 'plan' to thwart a legitimate TEA Party candidate from winning the GOP nomination. That's what I think this is all about.

Dixie, I went through that when I voted for Ross Perot. Being skilled and succesful in commerce is no gaurentee that one would be as equally skilled in politics, public policy, governance and public administration.

I have watched his interview with O'Reilly---and I have to say Trump is a no nonsense straight shooter...a refreshing non-politician who as you note is definitely capable to be a president.

I think his biggest weaknes for a presidential run is that he'd shirk-off any handlers who tried to advise and steer him to win. I, mean, I like his renegade style-but that style would allow the media to shred him as they did Palin. The Donald has the panache, but he'll need the subtle charm of Reagan who could laugh with the media- or he'll be toast.

And since Perot didn't win, there really wasn't a chance to prove those skills was there? You keep bringing this argument up, but it's moot if the chance to succeed never is realized.

Hilarious! Palin, Trump, a mormon, Huckabee and a pot head from N.M.!!! LOL! when it comes down to it you radical right wingers will vote for whoever the Koch brothers tell you to vote for. Funny post Dix, I get it, April fools day!

Well US to state the obvious. If Perot had the political skills he would have won the election. Instead he self destructed, poltically speaking.

this would be funnier than when Ross Perot's feet didn't reach the floor from the debate chair.

Not even close, Mott, Mark Zuckerburg is a richer asshole than Trump.

And Perot didn't lose for lack of political skills. He lost because he's a lunatic!

I'm glad To see the Cons supporting a social liberal for once!

How is Trump socially liberal? He's socially ecclectic-not liberal. He supports private unions-he does not support gay marriage (same as Obama) he does not support abortion. What other "social liberal" policy are you talking about?

Thats true, but it couldn't be any worse that what we have now.....Mr. 57 States ain't no rocket scientist....

I honestly don't understand anyone who stuck with Perot after he withdrew from the race over the "CIA are going to ruin my daughter's wedding" episode. WTF Mott and Cawacko? Do I have to sick the FBI on you guys, now?

I was 18 years old and a freshman in college. I was too busy trying to learn South Central Los Angeles and chasing every woman around campus to pay much attention to a Presidential election. By the time I voted I think the they had already declared Clinton the winner.

I withdrew my support after that news conference. But I really liked him up until then.
