If I were a member of his church, I would claim not to know him, also! but apparently the guy was famous for his "blow" horn.

So, basically a local semi-celebrity known as "that crazy dude who protests in the French Quarter" makes him "renowned"?

Seriously, "renowned" preachers are known. Ted Haggard was renowned, shoot there was a movie about his church; this guy is some dude who protests somewhere whose name most of us don't know. Even Topper never heard of this guy until this story came out other than as "that dude who protests"...

We have a restaurant in Alaska that is renowned for its wine, but I bet you have never heard of it. Chilkoot Charles is renowned worldwide, are you familiar with the establishment in Colorado?

He is known locally and has been featured in the news with his blow horn for sermonizing in the French Quarters. He is now nationally renown for his perversion!
