What astounds me is that I've read how so many Republicans are ready and even eager to see the Government shut down because they plan to hold up any attempt at passing a budget again.

Doesn't a one of them remember how the public perceived the exact same situation back in 94? This new wave of Republicans are going to come sweeping in and make their demands. Democrats will then try and compromise with them and get shut down, and one more time the entire country is going to blame Republicans for shutting down the Government due to their inability to work with their fellow congressmen and women.

Those who forget the past are forever condemned to repeat it...

Let's really recap that time....

Reps went toe to toe with Clinton, the government was effectively shut down, the two sides then compromised on Budgets going forward and we came the closest in 50 years to not increasing our nations debt in a fiscal year as we lowered deficits each subsequent year of the 1995-2000 time frame.

All of this is true, but while the Republican's numbers tanked, Clinton's soared. The budget looked more like what Clinton wanted and less like what Republicans wanted. IF the Republicans don't work to compromise with the democrats and the president, it could very well blow up in their face again. Mitch McConnell said in the National Journal last week "We do not control the government and cannot control the government when the president holds the veto pen, we need to have a humble, grateful response about this election. Incidentally, there is no polling data that suggests [the voters] love us."

EXACTLY!

Even though Republicans had the new majority, after the country watched them stamp their little feet at every compromise offered up by Clinton and congressional Dems, Republicans had to deal with a serious image problem for quite a while.

yeah, so serious that they picked up seats in the Senate the next two election cycles and lost a whopping 7 seats in the House over the same time frame.

People wanted the power split, because it forced the two parties to compromise (thus moderating the agenda and eliminating the extremists positions for the most part)

The Reps numbers tanked because they tried to impeach Clinton.... not because of the budget issues. The budget discussion forced the extreme positions out of the equation. Both sides moderated.

That said, McConnell is absolutely correct. They need to revert back to the Tip vs. Reagan days or the Clinton vs. Rep Congress days if they wish to maintain control of the House in 2012 and potentially pick up seats in the Senate (not to mention the WH).

things are different this time around. most people today have seen the excesses of congress and are willing to accept a shutdown in order to see spending cuts, even in the military budget.

Funny, because it seems that the Dems were the ones stamping their feet in Congress, but do go on pretending that the party making GAINS in the SENATE was the one the public was dissatisfied with.

Saying 'they could have had bigger gains' could be said for EITHER party.

The new majority had just been swept into power 2 years earlier and were wildly popular with their constituents.

YET, in two short years Republicans had squandered all that good will and constituent support to such a degree that the best they could muster was minor gains in the Senate and LOSSES in the House, shows just how dissatisfied the populace was with Republicans who shut down the Government over their petty little quibbles.

Your ignorance knows no bounds. There are only so many seats they can win. They had JUST gained 9 seats in the Senate in 1994. They picked up another 3 putting them at 55 total. That is the highest total for the Reps since the first part of the century.

Losing 4 seats in the House in 1996 is hardly 'squandering' anything. The entire House is up for re-election every 2 years. They populace still returned the Reps to power.

If you want a true example of 'squandering good will'.... look at what your precious Dems have done in the past 2 years. The 'demise of the Reps' and 'the Reps will be out of power for decades' turned quickly into MASSIVE losses for the Dems in both the House and the Senate.
