The City's argument was if they only charged when the service was needed no one would pay the $75 at the start of the year.

It does seem like they could have saved the house and hit the dude with a fat fine (of course no guarantee they would get paid).

one other thing....If it was truly a privatized or libertarian based fire department, they would have GLADLY accepted the guys payment and put out the fire. Only a policy bound liberal/socialist type government would stand around like union workers and claim it wasn't their job.

Yeah, it wasn't the money, was it. They decided they were going to teach the guy a lesson by letting his home burn to the ground, and then try to justify it with that BS excuse.

And re: your comment "If there is a fire in my town that is beyond the capability of the local dept, then they request assistance from the next town and they get it." That's exactly the way it is here, also. No property burns to the ground just because only one fire company turned up. It's about saving lives and minimizing damage, not the effing fee.

Because it all stinks to high heaven. What happens when this department gets an alarm, does someone run to the computer and bring up a database that shows who did or didn't pay, and if payment wasn't received they still suit up and drive to the scene so they can stand there and (figuratively) say "nyah, nyah, loser"?

The man said he forgot to pay this year. Nobody from the city came forth and said "Cranick's a liar, he's never paid for any year", which would support their claim that he was just avoiding payment.

My opinion is, you save the property and animals on humanitarian grounds and argue the details later. But the whole business about checking records before responding reeks.
