Our Intelligence community told Bush Saddam had WMDs. The FBI questioned Saddam for a year and they say Saddam was very afraid of Iran with whom he had been in an 8 year war. So Saddam reasoned that if the US thought he had WMDs so would Iran. He went about making it appear he had WMDs. He even kicked the inspectors out. He thought China and Russia would prevent the UN from going with the US to attack Iraq. (They did.) Saddam did not count on the US going it alone. Saddam overplayed his hand. Also the US did not want Saddam controlling such a huge portion of the world's oil supply in Iraq, Kuwait and eventually Saudi Arabia.

The big mistake Bush made was putting boots on the ground.
