No one thought a war with Venezuela would start but there was a belief of great instability and possible civil like war and spill over to neighbours in the country. Just as a strike and take out of Cuba's leadership would not lead to war.
The Trump admin avoided that by supporting the same murderous regime to stay in power which only betrayed their entire reason for going in.

Later, he said it was because they were on the edge of developing nuclear technology (after he obliterated their program).

Calm down what do you think Trump took Venezuela for? Iran's navy has been turned into submarines now and we are going to prevent mining of the straits of Hormuz so gas prices will settle back down. The sky isn't falling Chicken Little. This surge in prices will still be less than the prices of gasoline under Potato heads administration.
