Irony: Windmills fail due to wind

Read this bloggers comments from your link: Too fricking sad man.

That domestic wind turbine blew down because it was not supported by guy cables that are normally used. Maybe the owner thought he did not need them. The large ones in wind farms don't blow over. However they have to be shut down in high winds to prevent the blades from flying apart. They also have to disconnect from the grid at low wind speeds. That is why they are a useless waste of taxpayers' money. They are totally incapable of supplying a reliable source of power, and should be scrapped. The politicians have been conned by wily salesmen.

interesting comment......completely false of course, but interesting.....the simple fact is, wind turbines produce more energy than they consume in production.....there is no logical reason to reject them....

the most interesting proposal I have ever heard.......have you ever had to change your tire along an interstate and nearly had the air sucked out of your lungs by a passing truck?.....someone has proposed building small, interconnected wind turbines that mount on top of those concrete lane dividers they use for construction.......turbines powered by the passing trucks and cars......

It's always interesting when those on the right take an "anti-green" position. Good luck w/ that one going forward.

I have yet to see a wind turbine destroy the fishing industry of of Louisiana.

I have yet to see an offshore oil well, disrupte the migratory path of falcon's, in North Dakota.

When you have green shoved down your throat enough, you tend to throw it up.

How does one assemble a windmill without the guy wires? My point is it's absolutely ridiculous that the wires would be optional. The person who assembled it must be an idiot and further, the governemnt, wherever this took place, is incompetent in allowing consumers to DIY these dangerous machines.

GREEN energy needs to be more stringently regulated

LOL only half serious

Does seem to need better regulation to avoid this type of accident in the future, no?

While it happened a couple decades ago, and wind power generators have progressed since then, they tried installing a wind farm south of Livingston Montana. Livingston is known for its sustained winds. The farm was online less than 3 months when a large storm blew through, which knocked down half the generators and burned out most of those left standing.

They are installing a new farm, with stronger risers and turbines with featherable props for those 80 mph+ wind storms Livingston gets several times a year.

That said, while I think wind power has a place, I also think it is too variable to be anything but a minor supplemental source when it comes to maintaining a stable grid.

Or a liberal, more concerned with how things look then how they work.

The fact that extreme high winds cause problems for wind turbines makes perfect sense. And the fact that they are taken off line when the wind drops makes perfect sense.

This is much ado about nothing, imho.

Stupidity seems reasonable to morons, true.

Nice sniping, but you forgot to add any valid comment about the topic.

Hydroelectric plants do not generate 24/7, but no one seems to ridicule them as being worthless. This is the same issue. The problem is a matter of storage of the electricity generated.

WM supposes some random conservative bloggers comments are worth more than the markets judement of what is useful energy?

Conservatives: enemies of humankind, now enemies of the market as well, in their drive to promote as much suffering as possible.

At most, such a system could only hope to recapture a small fraction of lost energy. Sustained natural wind is pretty much always going to be stronger (even, I imagine, IN the oil age).

????....do you for some reason stand opposed to recapturing lost energy?.......and I suspect you haven't bothered to think this through if you believe that the air currents that surround any city highway are less strong than ANY sustained natural wind......
