Not to be overly offensive but in many ways, especially for brands of Christianity that contain a literal torment in hell clause for failure to achieve salvation it kind of feels like that.

Promulgating criminal laws and creating a police force is done out of self interest because people wanted to protect their Lamborghinis and manor houses, and they want protection from being murdered by thugs.

That is not something to point to as an example of human morality and virtue. If anything, the criminal code and the police are evidence of human immorality and the ubiquitous dark side of our nature.

Morality is selfless self sacrifice. Morality is not self interest. Oscar Schindler, Giorgio Perlasca, the the gospel of Luke's Good Samaritan are examples of objective morality that one can legitimately point to.

Atomic matter is not moral. We do not consider ants, aardvarks, and antelope to be moral agents. When male rabbits forcibly copulate with female rabbits we do not call it rape. When a male lion kills the cubs of it's rival we do not call it murder. We instantly recognize it's instinctual behavior driven by cold, calculating principles of Darwinian evolution.

If physical materialism is correct, why separate ourselves from all other animals in Earth's history, and maintain the delusion that we are moral agents?

A slight disagreement on the nature of morality. It can be out of mutual self-interest. A lawless society is not only selfish, like the Trump administration, but soon falls apart since there is no interest in sticking together. A society that wants law for mutual protection of all members of the society will stick together out of self-interest and protection for the individual and their families.

Agreed the law of the jungle is brutal. Animals live in the moment and react according to their genetic programming and experiences. Human beings have the unique ability to look forward and plan accordingly.

My take is that cooperation for mutual advantage is based on self interest. There is nothing mysterious about it, other animal species cooperate with the pack or with family members. That has a perfectly good Darwinian explanation: to protect, preserve, and propagate one's own genetic information.

The atheist Richard Dawkins wrote s book about it called The Selfish Gene, lol.

What is noteworthy is Oscar Schindler or Georgio Perlasca risking torture and death to save thousands of complete strangers, or the Good Samaritan sacrificing his own resources to save a stranger from a rival tribe that hates the Samaritans, without any expectation of mutual advantage or reciprocity.

Agreed on your take although humans seem to bump it up to the next level even if some keep it at the animal level.

People like Schindler are the exception, not the rule. Most Germans turned a blind eye or openly supported the abuse and murder of Jews just like some Americans turn a blind eye to the abuse and murder of illegals by the White Nationalists.
