Helen Mirren Should Fucking Hang!

Not really. There was no way the Germans could build a fleet large enough to invade the east coast, let alone produce the man power for such an invasion.

I advanced the same argument before and pointed out that if they had taken over the French, Italian and British fleets they would have had not just the firepower but the manpower, especially so if the Eastern Front had been won in 1941.

Technically, you could say the Turks brought in the Modern World, by destablizing Western commerce, and forcing change.

Nothing to do with the industrial revolution then, or the British Empire spreading it across the globe. Turks? We shit them in WWI

The modern world essentially began in 1453, with the fall of Constantinople, as well as the end of the 100 Years War, and invention of movable type.

That is considered Early Modern. You can at least be proud for having been a part of ushering in the truly Modern, by fighting the French after 1789, and kicking their asses twice in 1815 to end the war.

Brought it in and dropped it off, took a step back, and watched while the Americans made it shiny and new

We employ cleaners to polish things. America has largely ridden on the back of our achievements.

Even your space program, America's one true original achievement was created on the back of Nazi rocket technology.
Innovation has its own merits, improving on the crappy job some other person did with something is what made America great. You don't have to invent the car, if you can make it better and affordable you win.

What they are proud of, and they should be, is the Empire they ruthlessly conquered.

The modern world started with industrialisation.

Before that it was peasant agricultural based economies.

What they are proud of, and they should be, is the Empire they ruthlessly conquered.

Is there another way to conquer but ruthlessly?

The true impact of the British Empire and what it gave the world will only be evident when the world-wide colonial whine ends. Our impact was bigger than Rome's.

That assumes so much it's not even a legitimate mental exercise. Not to mention that none of the navies had the transport capabilities to cross the Atlantic.

The way we arrange the dates is this:

<475 AD: Classical and Ancient World
475-900: Early Middle Ages/Medieval aka Dark Age
900-1300: Central Middle Ages/Medieval
1300-1453: Later Middle Ages/Medieval
1453-1789: Early Modern Period
1789-Present: Modern Age

Not to mention that none of the navies had the transport capabilities to cross the Atlantic.

Simply a case of doing what we did to kick the Argies out of the Falklands. Cruise liners.

All very arbitrary. What is so modern about the world before industrialisation? It had the same agricultural basis as the medieval.

You shouldn't fight this, but be proud. The American nation has British DNA in its blood. Its what makes you strong. Imagine if the Spanish founded the North American colonies. You'd be like Mexico now...

You inherited Roman Culture just as Roman inherited Hellanistic Culture:

Camelot is to England being the new Rome as The Aeneid is to Rome being the new Hellanistic Greece (both are largely bragging rights, but reveal some profound truths about the societies which produced them).

Still would not have the capacity to land in America in any significant numbers.

Bear in mind, I'm not saying we Americans were the sole cause of victory. I'm simply saying we had no threat of invasion, at least not foreseeable.

I remind people of this every waking hour. Its why I am such an Anglophile, and the only American on here who appears to not be on the defensive. I'd probably want to sleep with your women more than any others regardless, but I do have a fondness for the culture which mine is decended from.

You inherited Roman Culture just as Roman inherited Hellanistic Culture:

There was a gap of 1200 years between the end of Roman occupation and the founding of the British Empire. After the Romans left Britain the vast, vast majority of Roman influence was annihilated by the Anglo-Saxons.

Actually we're strong because of Irish DNA. Just as you may exude some good qualities, based on Irish and Scottish heritage.

20 liners can carry 80'000 troops. Probably form a bridgehead in somewhere like Newfoundland. Then the round trips begin....

Consider this: With the fall of Rome, Britain's Heptarchy was the most sophisticated and functional society in all of Europe. Some incompetent Bretwalda's were unfortuntate to come along, and Britain was severely knocked backward in 1066 when the Normans invaded. The advent of monarchy and feudalism, however, did not prevent Britain from developing common law, individual rights, and ultimately democracy and constitutionalism.

Just my take...

There's a huge dosage of Germany in the US as well. Germans (those that remember they are of German descent) are the single largest ethnic group in the US. It was one of the reasons that it was so difficult to get the US into that war in Europe.
