Shaken, not stirred!
I think the policy was racist. But the black kids are the victims. I don't see why they would teach black students as a group anyway. Why should they be singled out for specialized teaching based on the color of their skin rather than their individual performance?
As for the field trip, it was just a terrible idea. Black kids are not the only ones who can benefit from black role models.
Taichi, many if not most elementary school kids would feel cheated out of a chance to meet a rocket scientist. I see no reason to assume most just wanted a break from classes.
Here's the deal String: Evaluations of educational standards are a collection of stats... gender, race, economic, etc. In this instance in Ann Arbor, the stats showed black kids under performing. They weren't being singled out or specialized solely on race, their test scores did that.
Now, as I've said time and again on this thread, the "lunch brunch" should not have been the immediate response...why not just set up after school tutorial programs? But since the principal went the particular route, I'm still stumped as to why the PTA, etc. didn't raise hell UNTIL this field trip? Did it take them this long to realize this was a violation of State law?
And yes, we should strive for a society were a role model's ethnicity or race shouldn't be a factor on any level...but we haven't got there yet....hell, there are people STILL fighting the Civil War, so it's going to take another generation.
As for the kids, like I said before they saw one group of kids getting a day off...the reason wasn't paramount to them, just the parents.
I noted that the decision to can the "lunch bunch" acknowledged that it was "well intentioned" but broke the law. That sounds fair to me.
