Another Colorado School Shooting...

It's probably because it is so local, but I can't believe that people aren't talking about this here. (So, I found the story on a news site from somewhere else.)

Teacher tackles gunman supected in school shooting

By P. SOLOMON BANDA
Associated Press Writer

LITTLETON, Colo. (AP) - The gunman was walking through a middle school parking lot and taking shots at students with a hunting rifle as terrified teenagers ran for their lives. He had just wounded two students and seemed ready to unleash more violence when a math teacher named David Benke sprung into action.

Benke confronted the 32-year-old gunman, tackled him and pinned him to the ground with the help of another teacher, stopping what could have been a much more violent encounter in a city all too familiar with tragic school shootings. The shooting occurred in the same city where the Columbine High School massacre happened nearly 11 years ago.

"Unfortunately he got another round off before I could grab him," Benke said. "He figured out that he wasn't going to be able to get another round chambered before I got to him so he dropped the gun and then we were kind of struggling around trying to get him subdued."

The two students survived Tuesday's shooting and one remained hospitalized.

Police said they aren't immediately sure about what motivated Bruco Strongeagle Eastwood to target Deer Creek Middle School just after classes had ended for the day. Eastwood has an arrest record in Colorado dating back to 1996 for menacing, assault, domestic violence and driving under the influence, and he is believed to have a history of mental issues.

That teachers got some balls.

The ones calling the radio show I was listening to. They suggest that he would have had medication if the gub'mint was handing it out so he'd be passive enough. I'm not kidding, at least three callers were saying it directly and another who pretended he "hated" to say it.

You can call it "sh*t" if you want, but it simply is what I heard.

Meh, if Obamacare included mental health it may have helped, but there's a strong avoidance to seeking mental health amongst the insane anyway. And there's really no guarantee he was "insane" in any case - almost certainly had a personality disorder, but insane?

And I don't think most plans cover mental health anyway.

Well, his dad should have some accounting to do. Calling his son a chickenshit isn't going to cut it.
We'll see. It doesn't seem like he knew much about the man. The guy moved into his father's house five years ago (he'd have been 27 at that time), and stayed pretty much clean during those years at his father's house. He really didn't have much information about his son's past as he wasn't part of the man's life until then.

It would really depend on what he knew when. Most people who run ranches don't think about keeping their adult children from access to their hunting rifle. Had he known that his son was such a turd he certainly needed to lock that thing up. I wouldn't want my guns used for any of that.

Although, he knew his son supposedly spoke with "people who weren't there"... I would have locked my guns up for sure...

I suppose that these are people who knew the guy intimately? They knew he was on or was supposed to be on meds? What a crock. The truth is that despite having antipsychotic meds prescribed, the rate of noncompliance among schizophrenics in actually taking their medication is disturbingly high.

I'm more disturbed that someone with his documented history had access to a firearm and ammunition.

How are you supposed to keep a felon from walking over to a family members house, taking some guns, and walking away? The family member doesn't even have to be in on it.

According to his father he was "talking to people who weren't there" rather regularly.

All of my firearms except the one I carry are locked up in a safe. I think that should be the way we all store our guns.

I have looked at those. Do you like yours?

I have something similar except its a 3 digit code entered on a raised keypad.
I like it better, because if I need to get it I can even in the dark and without punching numbers. If the batteries die you can use the key to get in and restore it.

The one I carry is locked away at night. I have one of these mounted to the wall near my bed.

OK, I watched the video....and after I muted the sound I like the looks and the concept of that type of safe. Definitely something I will consider. All my guns but one are locked in a cabinet but can be accessed if someone wanted to break the glass and get them. Don't have a safe but am mostly concerned about the kid getting at the guns, though he knows better. Would like something like this to keep by the bed so I don't have to:

a) keep the loaded pistol in an unlockable cabinet near the bed OR

b) keep the loaded pistol in the locked gun cabinet where it is even harder to get to

You can conclude that I use the (a) choice above but am somewhat uneasy, not because I worry about my kid so much, but because my kid isn't the only kid in my house all the time.

Yeah, what I did previous to the safe was put the gun (unloaded) in a drawer by the bed, the ammunition (in the clip) in a different drawer nearby but not in the same nightstand.

I didn't like that arrangement.

The teacher who dissarmed him is a true hero, he heard shots and instead of running he tackles the guy and subdues him.

I read their injuries were non life threatening. Co better suck this teachers nuts. If he runs away you may be looking at another dozen dead kids.
