It's probably because it is so local, but I can't believe that people aren't talking about this here. (So, I found the story on a news site from somewhere else.)

Teacher tackles gunman supected in school shooting

LITTLETON, Colo. (AP) - The gunman was walking through a middle school parking lot and taking shots at students with a hunting rifle as terrified teenagers ran for their lives. He had just wounded two students and seemed ready to unleash more violence when a math teacher named David Benke sprung into action.

Benke confronted the 32-year-old gunman, tackled him and pinned him to the ground with the help of another teacher, stopping what could have been a much more violent encounter in a city all too familiar with tragic school shootings. The shooting occurred in the same city where the Columbine High School massacre happened nearly 11 years ago.

"Unfortunately he got another round off before I could grab him," Benke said. "He figured out that he wasn't going to be able to get another round chambered before I got to him so he dropped the gun and then we were kind of struggling around trying to get him subdued."

The two students survived Tuesday's shooting and one remained hospitalized.

Police said they aren't immediately sure about what motivated Bruco Strongeagle Eastwood to target Deer Creek Middle School just after classes had ended for the day. Eastwood has an arrest record in Colorado dating back to 1996 for menacing, assault, domestic violence and driving under the influence, and he is believed to have a history of mental issues.

I just heard the gunman's father on the radio. (Funny side since they are in short supply in these cases, the man said his son was "chickenshit" on live radio.)

I guess the boy who was shot is in some serious hurt. I hope everybody comes out of this one okay.

Here the Democrats are trying to say that Obamacare would have fixed this. However, actually putting him in prison at least one of the 9 times he was arrested for assault or menacing with a weapon could have actually made it not happen, but medication doesn't guarantee the insane won't be insane.

What Democrats there are saying "Obamacare" would have fixed it? Seriously. And don't give me that "heard it on the radio" garbage.

The ones calling the radio show I was listening to. They suggest that he would have had medication if the gub'mint was handing it out so he'd be passive enough. I'm not kidding, at least three callers were saying it directly and another who pretended he "hated" to say it.

You can call it "sh*t" if you want, but it simply is what I heard.

I think that hillariouis dems are reaching this far to pump socialized medicine. They'd have had a smidgeon of a leg to stand on with a too many guns argument.

I think it's hilarious that three people calling in to conservative talk radio = "Democrats."

LOL. It isn't any mainstreamers doing this, just callers on a radio show.

What makes you think it was conservative radio? Did you know that Clear Channel actually owns the "progressive talk 760" in our area? They still play Air America.

I can see an argument that would actually put him away one of the previous 9 times he was arrested. Too much worry about people using drugs, not enough people actually prosecuted for true crimes.

If the resources were going toward such crimes instead of drug trafficking and such they likely would have put him away!

I suppose that these are people who knew the guy intimately? They knew he was on or was supposed to be on meds? What a crock. The truth is that despite having antipsychotic meds prescribed, the rate of noncompliance among schizophrenics in actually taking their medication is disturbingly high.

I'm more disturbed that someone with his documented history had access to a firearm and ammunition.
