‘Oppenheimer’ fanfare likely to fuel record attendance at New Mexico’s Trinity atomic

While the lore surrounding the atomic bomb has become pop culture fodder, it was part of a painful reality for residents who lived downwind of Trinity Site. The Tularosa Basin Downwinders plan to protest outside the gates to remind visitors about a side of history they say the movie failed to acknowledge.

The group says the U.S. government never warned residents about the testing. Radioactive ash contaminated soil and water. Rates of infant mortality, cancer and other illnesses increased. There are younger generations dealing with health issues now, advocates say.

That's terrible.

So, another bunch of people who know nothing or next to nothing about what they're talking about are trying to get big bucks from the government like some sort of lottery. The levels of fallout from the one Trinity test are negligible to nonexistent. No similar situation exists for Japanese in or near Hiroshima or Nagasaki for example. They might have a case being downwind and under 100 miles from all the Nevada open air nuclear tests, but the one N. Mexico test is bullshit on this.

LOL. Right on cue! Never fails!

Have you bothered to look at the charts this group is using for the levels of fallout? Even it shows miniscule levels immediately after the detonation event, and those would have plummeted in weeks as most decay elements are short-lived. When you get to long-term fission fragments, the amount of radiation--all alpha and beta--is truly miniscule. It's indistinguishable from background radiation.

I am sure you are going to post the charts.

I used to live in Alamogordo, NM and worked at Holomam AFB. Never heard of this.
Interesting how this suddenly comes to light now. What a coincidence.

This is just money grubbing. It's like someone saying they were in Vietnam, and therefore Agent Orange caused their health problems. No further evidence needed.

Let’s figure this out. To be compensated a person would have to be 78 or older, have lived in the Tularosa Basin in 1945 and show signs of birth defects.
