The levels of fallout from the one Trinity test are negligible to nonexistent. No similar situation exists for Japanese in or near Hiroshima or Nagasaki for example. They might have a case being downwind and under 100 miles from all the Nevada open air nuclear tests, but the one N. Mexico test is bullshit on this.

Even it shows miniscule levels immediately after the detonation event, and those would have plummeted in weeks as most decay elements are short-lived. When you get to long-term fission fragments, the amount of radiation--all alpha and beta--is truly miniscule. It's indistinguishable from background radiation.

Let’s figure this out. To be compensated a person would have to be 78 or older, have lived in the Tularosa Basin in 1945 and show signs of birth defects.

Downwinders are not new. Many of the facilities involved with making and testing of the nukes in the West of the US have significant downwinder populations. Studies have been done on these effects. One particularly disturbing one was a scientist in St. Louis who collected children's lost teeth to test for plutonium and other long-lived radionuclides from fallout from atmospheric testing.

It's reasonable that Trinity might impact folks downwind.
