Haley doubles down on cognitive tests as White House, older lawmakers bristle

“In the America I see, the permanent politician will finally retire,” Haley said Wednesday during a speech in Columbia, South Carolina, launching her White House bid. “We’ll have term limits for Congress and mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old."

Is Haley right?

1. Should we have term limits?

2. Should there be a mental competency test for politicians 75 and older.

Personally I think she is right. I don't see it happening but it should.

Diane Fienstien would have been gone years ago. I very seriously doubt Biden could
pass a MoCA test. Biden has A Fib and people with A fib are at increased risk of cognitive impairment and dementia. With A fib the incidence of dementia doubles every 5.9 years. If you watch Biden videos from his first term as VP till now the difference is disturbing.

We don't need a dementia patient with his finger on the nuclear button regardless of party.

I’m late to this thread but with someone like Feinstein it’s be careful what you wish for. I actually voted for her in the 2018 general because her opponent was well to the left of her. In California no one is going to be as ‘moderate’ as Feinstein. Especially some progressive millennial or Gen Z person. I wish she would stay in office.

you are acknowledging that the constitution, as already amended, allows a requirement of mental competency for candidacy.....thank you......that was the point I was leading Jarot to......

No, my point was the opposite. Congress cannot add any requirements to those contained in the Constitution. That was proven in the attempt to impose term limits.

"U.S. Term Limits, Inc. v. Thornton, 514 U.S. 779 (1995), is a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in which the Court ruled that states cannot impose qualifications for prospective members of the U.S. Congress stricter than those the Constitution specifies. The decision invalidated 23 states' Congressional term limit provisions.

The 25th does not allow a competency test, but if a majority of the cabinet plus the VP decide the president cannot carry out his duties, they can temporarily declare the VP the acting president. That is only until the president says he is able to resume his duties.

1. Amendments to the Constitution become part of the Constitution. 2. Do you think mentally incompetent people have the ability to serve

The point is that Congress cannot add additional requirements to be president, member of Congress, judge, etc. that go beyond what the Constitution requires. You cannot change the Constitution with a law or executive decision.

Amendments do become part of the Constitution, but there are no amendments changing the qualifications to be president involving competency. That is an issue decided by the voters.

I think it is sad that the demmycunts are reduced to arguing that it is unconstitutional to require our president be mentally competent......

So you think we can just add requirements to the Constitution without an amendment? It has nothing to do with Democrats. Any Republican who thinks we can add requirements to the Constitution has no respect or understanding for the document.

Who decides if a person is mentally competent to be president?

except Article 25 which specifically did just that......

Nope. The 25th provides for the VP to be acting president if the president is disabled. It has only been used for physical disabilities. It does not remove him from office.

Congress is not going to find Biden unable to perform his duties by a 2/3 vote which means he continues to rule. Do you think he is incompetent? If so, your method does not accomplish anything.

don't be an idiot......the fact that Congress may or may not vote to remove Biden from office does not contradict the fact that Article 25 provides for the removal of a president who is determined to be incompetent.........

It does not "remove" the president. He is still in office but is no longer governing until he declares he is capable of resuming control. If Congress does not support the president's decision to resume office they have to vote against him by a 2/3 vote.

So, whether the president is incompetent or not depends on a political decision made by Congress. I think many Republicans think Biden is incompetent; yet, the 25th cannot stop him from governing without an almost impossible to get 2/3 vote. Thus, the 25th did not accomplish anything because it was not successful in finding the president incompetent.

gosh I wonder if that's why they have tests for mental competence......

But none have ever been used, nobody has authority to require such a test and there is no mechanism for determining if he is incompetent. "Person, woman, man, camera, TV" is hardly a reliable test for competency although Trump said it was "difficult."

It was not a competency test. It was a quick test that seniors get in yearly physical exams to see if they have signs of Alzheimer's or dementia starting. It is kindergarten-level testing.

He did say it was difficult, good catch.

why do you claim there are no such procedures while explaining what the procedures are?......or are you saying that if Biden failed a mental competency test, the Demmycrat controlled senate wouldn't vote to remove him......that I couldn't argue against......you could easily find 34 demmycrat senators who would also fail a mental competency test......

seriously?......you don't think Congress would be smart enough, if there was sufficient reason to worry about the mental competency of a president, to turn to science and ask "what method can we turn to to make this evaluation?.......you may be right......there are still a lot of incredibly stupid people in Congress......

If Congress was that concerned they would have had trump properly tested long ago.

you can't even prove your head's not up your ass.......

Did that actually sound like a witty reply, in your head? Did you think that a good gotcha like a 10 year old would?

Again, video for video, hands down Trump beats Biden in senior moments, and demented moments and its not even close. I would give 3 to one odds and post 3 Trump idiocy/delusion/senior moment videos for every one of Biden you could post and i would have plenty to spare.

it is NOT close.

Projection.

The GOP and Republicunts hid Reagan's lack of mental competency and Trumps but just like with them suddenly finding 'a hate of debt and deficits' whenever a Democrat holds the WH, when they love debt and deficits whenever a Republican is in the WH, they suddenly care about 'mental competency'.

No one takes you Republicunts serious and no one should. You cannot be the biggest boosters of one position when you have power and then reverse it when the Dems do and expect anyone to see you as anything but the fraud you are.
