Haley doubles down on cognitive tests as White House, older lawmakers bristle

Appointees get fired. Elected officials are more challenging. George Santos is an example there. If nothing else, they’d hold their seat but be stripped of all committees. The President would be subject to the 25th Amendment. Impeach the rest?

The House and Senate can expel its members with a 2/3 vote. The 25th Amendment would also require a 2/3 vote if the president challenged the disability claim. It is hard to get 2/3.

It depends upon what Congress agrees to beforehand. Consider the the filibuster.

I'm not sure of your point. I don't think Congress can agree to anything that would prevent the minority from blocking a 2/3 vote. I don't think the filibuster applies to such issues; but, if it does, it just prevents the vote from occurring which eliminates any removal.

I’m not a lawyer, but it seems Congress has agreed to several rules before..and always enacting them in the next term, of course. LOL

The deal to elect McCarthy speaker involved several procedural agreements.

But, as close as the margin between the parties in both houses, they are not going to agree to anything giving the other a chance to remove one of their members with a 2/3 vote. And, even without any agreements, it is unlikely either is likely to get 2/3 on a straight vote.

Probably. It seems the Republicans are ready to accept such an agreement but the Democrats are not since they are betting 2024 on Biden. After all, he’s all they got.

The Constitution does not require a mental competency test as a qualification for president; that requirement cannot be added as a requirement (without an amendment).

Inability to serve is the purpose of the 25th Amendment.

you are acknowledging that the constitution, as already amended, allows a requirement of mental competency for candidacy.....thank you......that was the point I was leading Jarot to......

No but a test is not one of the constitutional requirements.
Neither is releasing your tax returns. Congress should require it be given to all primary presidential candidates and the results released. If they fail the exam voters should decide what happens next.

1. Amendments to the Constitution become part of the Constitution. 2. Do you think mentally incompetent people have the ability to serve

I think the voters should simply consider the fact that a candidate did or did not release them as part of their vote. Only an idiot would vote for someone who refused. If we have enough voters who do not care, we get what we deserve.

“In the America I see, the permanent politician will finally retire,” Haley said Wednesday during a speech in Columbia, South Carolina, launching her White House bid. “We’ll have term limits for Congress and mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old."

Is Haley right?

1. Should we have term limits?

2. Should there be a mental competency test for politicians 75 and older.

Personally I think she is right. I don't see it happening but it should.

Diane Fienstien would have been gone years ago. I very seriously doubt Biden could
pass a MoCA test. Biden has A Fib and people with A fib are at increased risk of cognitive impairment and dementia. With A fib the incidence of dementia doubles every 5.9 years. If you watch Biden videos from his first term as VP till now the difference is disturbing.

We don't need a dementia patient with his finger on the nuclear button regardless of party.

I oppose term limits. The people can elect who they please - provided democrats are restrained from defrauding elections.

As for mental competence - I strongly support that. John Fetterman has no place in the United States Congress. He is mentally incapacitated - as a matter of fact, not political animus.
