Maine Voters Repeal Law Allowing Gay Marriage

I really think this is correct. In 20 - 30 years most fundamentalist Christians will be dead.
I don't know about that but the younger fundamentalist christians will probably be more tolerant and open minded. Just as the present generation is much more tolerant and open minded about issues of race (like interacial marriage).

I really don't think so. Even religion itself has been getting more and more liberal. By that I mean that many religious organizations are less inclined to use the Bible to identify right & wrong behavior. I just read a book from the Barna Group (The un-Christian) and that seemed to be the conclusion of the direction "Christians" (term loosely used here) need to head in order to "reach people."

This was in response to cawacko. Mott posted between us. He is saying essentially what I am saying here.

A friend in Maine posted this as his FB status this morning:

"We interrupt this broadcast with a Special Announcement from the people of Maine to its gay and lesbian citizens: go to the back of the bus and stay behind the pink line."

It apparently was passed in the state legislature, but was not put to a popular vote. The vote yesterday was to repeal the legislation.
Ah... Yes, that's right. Thanks, my memory was just a bit off, there. I'm surprised they didn't just kick out the people who legislated it. The nation isn't quite ready for this step.

this whole issue got soo much pub it pisses me off. The nation is ready to stop Jailing pot smokers but we can't muster up the right kinda pub.

It treats them as second class citizens. It's a good fallback but not the end.

53% is not a big win. We are closer and the day is coming. No reason to throw in the towel now.

Personally, I believe the Government should get out of marriage all together. Marriage should be left to the religious organizations. If they want to marry a gay couple good for them. If not, good for them.

If the government wants to provide inheritance rights, visitation rights etc.... to couples, it should do so through civil unions. The civil unions, if provided, should be made available to any two consenting non-related adults. (sorry dixie... your cousin is still off limits)

The Maine vote got a lot of press in SF (for obvious reasons) but also because a lot of people from California went to Maine to volunteer for the campaign.

These votes have been close as has been noticed and I would think over time its more likely that people against gay marriage today are likely to change their opinion in the future to supporting it than those who are for it today switching in the future to being against.

I would think CA voters would be spending more time in state trying to figure out why Prop 8 failed...

exactly

prop 8 passed...not failed

Sorry... I forgot the position prop 8 took... I was thinking it supported gay marriage. But you are correct, it denied gay marriage.

Thanks for the correction.

What I therefore meant to say is.... 'they should be more concerned with why Prop 8 passed.'

:)

The nation is absolutely ready. The legislature should ignore the vote and pass it anyway as a constitutional amendment.

The Democrats obviously wouldn't lose their seat, you retard, especially since the vote was pretty much evenly split. No one loses there seat by supporting something that has 47% support. You are a political retard.

Fucking fucking idiot. What an absolutely ignorant thing to say.

you're the ignorant one....you can't amend the constitution in maine without getting it ratified by the voters :pke:

Um... They did pass it, then an Initiative passed to close it down. And yes, people lose their seats if all they can muster is 47% support, clearly you aren't very good at thinking today. Plus the legislature cannot amend their constitution by fiat.
